Standing on her hotel balcony, overlooking the breathtaking view of Boston 50 floors above, Arielle lets the fond memories of her childhood wash over her. Nostalgia hits her as flashes of her happy childhood hit her. Weekly family dinners, family get togethers, trick-or-treating with Adrian, not to mention those lovely Christmas celebrations they had. She shakes her head from her reverie."Today's the day, Arielle. The day you've been working your ass off for six whole years. The first day of your residency in the prestigious Edenbrook Hospital, which happens to be the reason you cut off all contact with your family, except for Adrian. Don't let your emotions mess it up now!", she mutters to herself as she feels a pang of pain in her heart.
She let her dark tresses free, letting it billow in the breeze, stretching her sore limbs. She gets dressed after deciding to change at the hospital, only to wear a pair of jeans and a matching jacket with a violet top, resembling the colour of her eyes.
She was irritated at the thought of eating at the same hotel room. Wanting a change of pace, she decides to eat breakfast at a cafe near the hotel upon her brother's recommendation. She orders a croissant and a chocolate cappuccino, staying true to her roots and to satisfy that chocolate craving.
Once finished, she realises that she still has time, almost two hours, till her first shift. She decides to take a stroll around the city thinking, "After all, you'll be here for three years. Might as well get to know the city."
She leaves the cafe and walks aimlessly until she stops at a particular house with a beautiful and blooming backyard. "It seems like a lifetime ago.", she chuckles with a sad smile. She recalls herself laughing and talking with her brother Adrian and godfather Naveen, eating dinner in a setting similar to this.
She remembers when Naveen would tell her stories of Edenbrook, about the people he met, about the patients he met, about the lives he would save. She would remember the smile and happiness radiating on his face when he would tell her stories, and would want to experience that too.
She remembers her 18th birthday when she decided that she would apply to medical school and follow in her godfather's footsteps. She remembers the smile blossoming on her godfather's face and the pride Adrian had on his face when he said that his little sister was going to save lives one day. And lastly, she remembers the disbelief and disappointment on her father's face when she told him that she wanted to carve her own path, instead of following her own family legacy.
She's just about to reminisce about her 18th birthday when her phone chimes. She sees it's Adrian, wishing her good luck. She heads back to the hotel to grab her bag and realise she's going to be late. "Crap! Way to make a first impression!" She rushes out of the room, not before thanking her brother for the sweet message.
Steeling her nerves for the very first day of her career, she takes a step towards her lifelong dream, having no clue what life has in store for her.
