Chapter Six.
•••
𝓣he next morning, Enola was back with many things to say. The girls grabbed a quick breakfast from the innkeeper before settling down on the floor of their room to delve into everything. Amelia explained what Sherlock had been up to at limehouse lane, and the building that was half burnt, then was filled in on more of the fight between Enola and the bowler hat man in return. Enola expressed concern for Sherlock finding Eudoria first, but Amelia shook it off. Eudoria raised Sherlock. She would be one step ahead of both siblings until she was ready to be found.
Amelia then explained Mycroft's involvement and then described the man set to hunt after them. They made a small map connecting everyone's involvement in a rapidly evolving case. Then Enola told her all about the Basilwether estate and who was involved, quickly connecting the dots that the man Mycroft was talking about was there at the same time as Enola, and his name was Detective Lestrade. That made them both a little worried, seeing the web start to interconnect. She told her about the family, the grandmother finding her out on the property and leading her away. Enola let on that she had a few theories but couldn't say anything yet, until she was absolutely certain, but it might have been a family involvement.
Amelia was starting to feel like this was less about family and more about royal status. What exactly was the reform and why was Tewkesbury so for it? Why would he run away if he intended to change? And why would his family conscript him if he was going to take the seat?
"I'm not sure, Enola, I have a bad feeling about his grandmother," the Hastings' girl expressed, digging her face into her hands solemnly.
"Well, every boy has some baggage," Enola shrugged, grabbing Amelia's hands, "yours just has a bit more than usual?" She offered. The girl let out a snort, covering her face as she playfully glared at Enola, but the nervous part of her registered the 'yours' and her cheeks flamed up as red as a fire engine. She shoved Enola back, the girl giving a laugh as she fell on her back. Amelia rolled her eyes at the annoying girl, huffing.
"So, you saw him, is he at least in good health?" Enola prodded, and Amelia nodded.
"Yes, he seemed fine, he was working in-"
"Convent Garden, yes. You know he had an extensive treehouse in the woods on his property. Full of literature on plants and flowers. He had everything up there. It was quite a home away from home," she teased, watching Amelia's eyes widen in wonder. So, that's where he spent his time, learning about nature in the woods. She longed to be able to see it, but her duties were in London.
"And he might not be as idiotic as we think. He had a whole plan. He led them astray. That's how the bowler had man was able to find me." Amelia nodded in thought. "That's why I believe the family are somehow behind this."
