They were going right through the wall of fog in front of them. The weather was unfitting for any kind of mist or fog and as they were going through the grey-ish clouds silently, Hyungwon knew that there had to be something unnatural behind them.
He wasn’t feeling cold easily and Wonho had made him wear a huge coat with a by pearls decorated collar, but there was a cold shiver running down his spine and his fingers were shaking slightly. It was this weird mixture of excitement and fear, which filled his whole body.
The boat they had taken was small. The wind was a little unfavorable for their course so Wonho had decided to take four rowers and a captain with him. The men weren’t exactly excited when they heard where they were heading for, but none of them dared to say a word. The only other who seemed to be excited about this whole thing despite Hyungwon was Jooheon.
The other was standing right next to Hyungwon at the bow of the ship, staring against a wall of white, trying to see anything.
Despite the fog, their boat was flowing almost gracefully through the harsh waves of the winter ocean. Wonho, who was sitting at the stern of the small boat, was giving navigation instructions to the captain and the crew. He must have taken this course many times already, Hyungwon wondered as Wonho directed the boat a little further starboard. So many times that he seemed to know their way without even being able to see where they were heading.
A dark shadow appeared in front of them and kept growing bigger and bigger and then – without a warning – their boat hit the sand, nearly making Hyungwon fall over by the sudden stop of movements. They had reached the coast of an island. The island was just as foggy as the ocean and Hyungwon couldn’t tell if the island had mountains or trees or if it was big or small. He could barely see his own hand when he reached out, making it seem to disappear in the clouds.
“You and your man stay here.” Wonho ordered the captain and he and his man willingly agreed. They weren’t necessarily excited about coming to this island in the first place and even less to stroll around a place they couldn’t even really see.
Hyungwon suddenly didn’t feel cold anymore, but the weather wasn’t warm either. There was a soft breeze, but the fog didn’t seem to move at all. There were no sounds, no birds singing, no rustling of the leaves and Hyungwon could barely hear the ocean despite the fact that it was hitting the coast right behind his feet. But it wasn’t quite either.
As soon as he had set his feet into the wet sand of the beach Hyungwon started to feel surprisingly at ease, as if he was ready to fall asleep any second. A feeling of apathy was filling his insides and Hyungwon didn’t even realize how he started to forget. He didn’t know what time of the day it was or what day of the month. Was it summer? Winter? And as his eyes wandered through the thick layer of the fog, he even started to forget about himself.
Why did he come here? When did he reach this island? Has he always lived here?
“Let’s move.” A familiar voice called and a hand grabbed his. Hyungwon had to admit that the man who was looking at him with a strangely hard expression had the most beautiful eyes Hyungwon had ever seen. “We shouldn’t stay on the beach for any longer than necessary. It’s cursed.”
Hyungwon got pulled by his arm and he followed the blonde man with the beautiful eyes deeper into the white and grey nothingness. And Hyungwon couldn’t remember having ever done anything else. He could hear the steady and deep breathe of the huge animal to his right, walking close enough to them so that Hyungwon could see the blurry outlines of its shadow, but too far for Hyungwon to be able see what kind of animal it was.
The sand under his feet soon was hard to walk on and Hyungwon felt was if he would fall over any second, because the other was pulling his arm so hard and was walking faster than he could follow.
