Darlene walked along the pavement of the dark street. It was still quite early in the night; probably around Eight forty-five PMv- seemly too early for her to retire to bed.
Taking short but slow strides, her attention was drawn to everything around her: from deserted streets to the dimly lit pathways and houses shut so tight, that not even the air could force its way in.
"How could someone be so cruel and selfish in their acts?" She thought ushering the memory to her consciousness.
Nevertheless, she heaved a heavy sigh and continued on her way.
The air was gloomy and as she took shallow but deep breaths in, the saltiness made itself known. She hugged her coat more tightly around her body as if it would cause the cold to leave her, but it didn't.
The streets became deserted at exactly Six PM since that terrible day. Shock waves tore through the small town, desiring that none should be left unaware of its occurrence.
For the first time in their town's history, the light was overcome by a permanent darkness, that had no intention of allowing the light to reclaim its reign. It was evident that it came to stay.
Fifteen to Twenty years later and no one could come close to what could have possibly sparked such an irrefutable disaster.
Even now, the small town is far from recovering fully. The life that everyone shared was snuffed out like a firesides' welcoming glow, whose time had come to be no more, for winter was gone.
Everyone lived each day as though they were being forced to do so, with nothing else to strive for. Hopes and dreams were permanently shattered, because many - especially the youths - were afraid that the same fate would be meted out to them: maybe even worse than its last victims.
They all had an idea of who did it, but the evidence wasn't enough and there were no witnesses. The detectives and investigators as well as the town's people were puzzled and often times, utterly confused as to how no witnesses existed; not even a hidden security footage of the incident was found recorded.
Perhaps there were witness, who unfortunately met their demise. However, it makes perfect sense that family members are fearful for their lives, which deters them from coming forward.
The more they thought of it, and searched for clues, the more confusing and harder it became. Darlene simply could not grasp the fact that a case like this was taking forever to solve. Each time they found something new it led them on a completely different path that had no relation to the original case at hand.
Checking her wristwatch for the time, she saw it was already after Ten PM. She panicked a little, knowing she shouldn't have been out so late, but the urge to take a nightly walk was ten times stronger than the feeling of staying inside and working on the case before she had decided to call it a night, at Midnight.
Little did she know that tonight would be the one; the one where everything would finally make sense to her, but will she be prepared to take it all? Can she hold herself together and endure the pain that she's about to feel?
Thinking that it's time to head back home, she stood in front of an old store and looked up at the sign that read: "Right Here, Right Now, is where your Search will End, if you haven't found it anywhere else!"
Reading the sign over and over she wondered why her mind thought it was time to head back, and her legs stopped here before it carried on.
Just as she glanced down the alley and began walking away, she heard a voice; "Found what you were looking for Miss?"
