Making new friends is hard when you are new where no one knows you. People think you're weird and a loser unless you make friends fast. But you have to choose the right ones. And the only way you know if they're trustworthy and they really want to be your friend: They would never leave you, or turn their back on you. Or keep secrets from you.

"Katie! You're going to be late for school!"

"I know mom! Just give me a second!!"

Sheesh, it takes a girl some time to look good on your first day when you don't know anyone or anything about the place. It just plain stinks not having your best friend to comfort you in a time like this. I wish dad kept his old job so we wouldn't have to move to this place. His old job was just fine! But he just had to move here. I walked downstairs to find my mom cooking pancakes. My mom, cooking pancakes. Now that was unusual.

"Honey, why are you standing there? Come sit down and eat." She said in a sweet tone.

"Uh mom? When do you ever make pancakes?" I ask when I sat down.

"For special days like today!" She replied.

She handed me a plate with pancakes and syrup on top. Man it looked good! I took a bite of that delicious pancake which filled my mouth with wondurous flavors!

"You need to make these more often!" I said with pancake with my mouth.

"Ha ha, very funny."Mom replied. "You know you only get these on special occasions since they take a bit to make."

"But mom!" I cried in a babyish tone.

"Now hurry up before you're late! Dads waiting for you in the car."

"But don I need to brush my teeth?" I questioned as she shooed me out the door with my backpack on me.

"You don't have time! Now go, I love you! Have a good first day!" She yelled as my dad and I drove away.

"What was that all about?" My dad asked with a questioning look.

"I don't know. Has she been acting this wierd lately?"

"I'm not so sure. I haven't noticed since I've been so busy with my new job."  My dad replied.

"Oh."

"How is your new job? Do you like it? Is it bad? Do you want to move back?"

"No." My dad laughed. "The job is going great! All of my interns are so nice and helpful. Even though it is stressful at times learning all this new stuff."

"Oh." I replied slumping in my seat.

"Why would you ask?" My dad asked.

"No reason" I mumbled.

"Well, we're here. Have a nice day! I'll come and pick you up after school! Dad said as I got out of the car.

"Bye dad!" I said as he drove off. "I'll see you later." I mumbled walking inside.

The school was a big place considering it was a small town. People were walking and talking everywhere I looked trying to find the office to get my locker and class schedule.

I kept looking until I saw a tall, thin girl walk up to me. "Do you need help?" The girl asked in a high voice.

"Yeah sure! Could you show me the way to the office? I'm new here and I need my locker and class schedule."
