Delilah Grace sat still he last period of the day. Unlike everyone else, she wasn't excited about leaving school for the weekend. She had had no home or guardian since the fire, and she refused orphanages.
"Delilah" the teacher called on her, "if 4x-5=15, what is x?"
"X is five," she answered immediately.
"How'd you get that answer?"
"Because you subtract five on the right side, you have to add five to both sides to eliminate it. Then you have 4x=20. To get rid of the coefficient, you divide both sides by four."
"Well done miss Grace!" the teacher congratulated, "you looked like you weren't paying attention." The bell rang, and the students all darted for their lockers. Delilah merely mosied, and she was confronted by the school bully once she got to her locker.
"Nerd," Mary-Anne Dess snarled, shoving Delilah's books out of her hands. She collected her books again and decided to fight back.
"Bitch," Delilah retorted, smashing Mary-Anne's foot under her own. She scurried away before Mary-Anne could make another move.
Later on in the afternoon, probably at about four o'clock, Delilah found herself sitting in an alley with her camera. The only thing Delilah could remember her parents by was the camera she had escaped the house with. It was a good camera too, and Delilah used it to its full capacity whenever she could. Thirty minutes later, she stood up stretch.
"My my," Mary-Anne said as she came into the alley, "How lucky am I to come across you? Of all people?"
"Leave me alone Mary-Anne," Delilah mumbled, grabbing up her stuff and trying to push past her and out of the alley.
"Uh uh, not so fast." Mary-Anne grabbed the top of Delilah's dirt caked shirt and pinned her to the brick wall of the building surrounding the alley. "You stepped on my foot and called me a bitch. You need to learn your lesson." With painfull force and accuracy, Mary-Anne landed a punch right on Delilah's nose. Her brown hair flew as her frail, pale body was knocked to the ground. She tried to keep the blood from gushing from her nose, but Mary-Anne's kicks inflicted more damage than Delilah could keep up with. One forceful kick to the face left Delilah dizzy and lightheaded. As she slipped from consciousness, she heard someone yell "Hey!" And saw two guys run over to Mary-Anne and another two crouch over her body. With her last amount of strength, she gripped to her camera, then she slipped away.
