Chapter One: The Move

I took one last look around the bedroom I've spent my whole life in. Now it was filled with packed boxes and an empty bed. Today was the day I was moving to Miami, Florida with my boyfriend to attend college.

Me and Cameron have been together since Sophomore year in high school. We've been friends since elementary.

I took my suitcase and purse and headed out to my car. Sure, it was only 30 miles away from my moms house, but I was going to miss her so much. My step-dad? Not so much. He's been married to my mom for 2 years. I really don't like him. Maybe it was the fact that my mom left my dad and he was the replacement, but I don't care.

I shoved my suitcase in the trunk and shut it. I headed back inside for my boxes of blankets, sheets, pillows, picture frames, and trophies from basketball. I guess you can say I was really into sports in high school. I was also in choir. It helped with my college application.

I walked back downstairs with 2 boxes and put them in the back of my car. Then I went back upstairs for the other 2 boxes. I'm not bringing that much given the fact that I'm sharing a dorm with a stranger. I'm not gonna have that much room for much stuff.

My phone started to ring and it was Cameron. I smiled and answered. "Hey babe." I said.

I can tell he's smiling on the other line. "Hey baby girl. Are you ready?" He asked. I thought it over.

"Yeah, I'm totally ready to start my own life away from my family and everything I've ever known." I was using sarcasm of course.

"Well, at least you'll have me." He tried to cheer me up.

"That's true. I can't believe they accepted us to the same college."

"I can. We both had fantastic grades in high school so I don't see why not."

"Also true." I smiled again, knowing he couldn't see me.

"Okay, well I'm gonna say bye to my folks and head out okay? I'll meet you there?"

"Okay babe. I love you." I said.

"I love you too." And then the line went dead. I put my phone in my pocket and headed back downstairs. I saw my parents waiting by the front door to say goodbye.

I put the last of my stuff in the backseat of my 2014 black Toyota Corolla. I really liked this car. It was a graduation present I got in June. It's now the end of July and the start of first semester was in a week. Time for everyone to move in.

I walked up to my mom and gave her a hug. She squeezed me until I lost my breath and couldn't breathe. I tapped her on the back and said, "can't... breathe..." She released.

"I'm sorry honey. I'm just going to miss you so much." I saw her eyes starting to rim with tears. I hugged her again.

"I know. I am too. I love you and I'll visit as much as I can. Besides, I'm only 30 miles away so that'll be at least once a month." She smiled.

"Okay, are you sure you have enough money in your checking account and savings? I can give you more." She put her hands on my shoulders and I put my hands over hers.

"Mom, I'm on a full scholarship. I don't need THAT much. Besides, I already have about $10,000 in checking and $35,000 in savings. I'm fine."

I guess you could say my family is 'rich'. My mom is a doctor and my step-dad is the CEO of some big company here in Florida. I have no idea what it is. Also, I've been saving allowance money since the beginning of junior year. So I'm all set.

"Okay honey, I love you and call me as soon as you get your stuff in your dorm." I hugged her once more and I waved farewell to my mom, step-dad, and house of my childhood.

I got into my car and headed straight to my new life at the University of Miami.
