Rose's shoes slapped lightly in the shallow water collected at the floor of the tunnel. If it wasn't used as some mad scientist's underground lair, this place would have been a sewage system. There was no lingering, foul smell in the air, but it definitely wasn't as sterilized as the asylum had been. The girl shivered, wondering how Fraud had managed to keep this place secret for so long. What was he hiding down here?
Her thoughts wandered back to Maddie, all by herself exploring a different branch of the tunnels, rendered nearly defenseless with whatever was nullifying her powers. She was concerned about what would happen if Fraud, or even her doppelganger, went after the teen first. It was two on two down here, meaning they could still be captured easily despite them being split up. Maybe this wasn't such a great idea after all.
A whisper drew her attention, her head snapping up once it was detected. She followed the sound, hoping that this wasn't a trap. She turned left into another corridor before she heard it again. It was compelling and alluring. She walked the length of a particularly long passage, coming to a split in the path running left and right. In the wall opposite, a rusted door was set into the stone.
The door looked more like a vault, the same wheel on the front used to open the hatch to this place. But whatever was calling for her led her here, so it had to be important. She gripped the wheel, slowly turning it with all the strength she had. Once the lock had unclicked, she shoved her body against the door, the thing screeching horrendously from age. What she found inside made her gasp.
It was all the victims that Fraud had hidden from them before. Each body, with its respective brain floating in its green liquid jar, were laid next to each other in rows, every individual stored in their own black body bag. Rose was elated that she had made this discovery, relieved that at least one part of their plan had been accomplished. But as she prepared to free the first victim, she couldn't help but think that this was too easy. Fraud wouldn't just leave his main source of vitality out in the open like this. Unless...
Something that the mad doctor said popped into her mind. Madeleine, you are the catalyst in all this. You will help me live forever. What had he meant by that? Was Maddie's soul somehow powerful enough to sustain the old man eternally? She wasn't quite sure, but it still spelled bad news for the teen. It was clear from the very beginning that Fraud did not have pleasant intentions for Maddie. She needed to finish up here and find her, quickly.
She moved through each victim one by one, entering their consciousness to free them from their prisons of torment. It was slow work, extending her abilities near their limits. There were more than a dozen in here, a lot more than was comfortable. He must have been keeping some of these victims for decades.
As she finished the last one, she was perturbed by the absence of someone in particular. Her uncle wasn't here. Fraud was probably keeping him somewhere else. Of course, he was, he wouldn't make it so easy for her. She exited the room, leaving behind a room full of empty body bags and jars.
Rose gauged both pathways before her, trying to decide which one was the best to take. So far, she hadn't sensed any emergency triggered over on Maddie's end. The goal was for all of them to escape alive, and currently, Ravenwood was still incapacitated. She had to search for him, free him, so they could all leave this nightmare forever.
Confidence in her stride, Rose turned to her left, heading deeper into the dark, creepy network of passageways, determined to find what she was looking for.

Author's Note: AHHHHHH, why are these chapters so short?! The next one will be longer. I promise.
I've got a big test tomorrow.
Praise is appreciated and constructive criticism is encouraged.
See you next time!
