Chapter Two
The nearest "common room" was on the floor below us and was rapidly filling with the new juniors and a few teachers. I scanned the crowd and couldn't find any sign of our previous hall monitor from last year,Casey.
Casey wouldn't have been hard to spot anyway with her wide range of colours in her hair and clothes.I walked behind Jakelyn into the room and looked for a seat. The room was cramped up and we had no choice but to stand up. A tall boy with dirty blonde hair approached Jakelyn, winked at me and slipped an arm behind her waist, pulling her to him.
Jakelyn turned around to see who it was. After seeing it was Nick she turned into a squeling five year old. She threw her arms up to hug him and managing to punch me in the chin.
"Whoa, hold your horses. Shouldn't you check out that girl you just clocked in the face?" Nick laughed. Jakelyn rolled her eyes and tapped the shoulder of another girl beside her.
I laughed quietly and a small burst of pain came from my jaw. I sighed and rolled my eyes at Jakelyn. "Thanks for clocking me in the face Jakelyn", I said dryly.
She turned her head sharply, her eyes turning into saucers as she saw the forming bruise on my jaw line."Oh shit, I didn't even realize! Let me get you a..a..uh..that..thing".
"An ice pack?"
"Exactly!" she snapped her fingers and made her way out from the crowd to go find one.I raised my eyebrows and looked at Nick who was staring at the door his girlfriend just went through. He turned back and put his hands into his pockets, a thing he does when he's thinking hard according to Jakelyn. We didn't speak and the noise of the students filled the wide room.
"I don't blame you for-" Nick started but was shushed by a near-by teacher.
"Here it comes", I breathed out."-what you did. He's an asshole and-"
"And yet you're rooming with him?" I asked him and was surprised by the sharpness in my voice, not caring about the frowning teacher."He's switching", he replied quickly,"I'll have a new guy with me like next week. And that sounded weird", he muttered the last part.
I was taken aback and I'm sure I looked like it. Even thought nothing had really happened to Nick and Travis, he was one of my closest friends and stood by me at all times.
Nick sighed and took his hands out of his pockets. He gave me a small smile before turning towards the front where a teacher was speaking.
"..you'll find your classrooms on your schedules and other facilities such as the bathroom. If you didn't already know, bathrooms, showers are open all day". There was a clear difference on who actually gave a fuck when the showers were open and who didn't.
What's the point? We have personal bathrooms in the dorms anyway.
"Check with your hall monitor for extra info. Now, everyone but the people rooming on floor three, can go. Floor three students, stay". The teacher finished and stepped away to talk to another teacher, visibly younger, while other students filed out.
I groaned inwardly, giving Nick a push forward. Since I was on the floor three, so was Nick and Jakelyn. This was fine. The only thing was that there were still two people whom I really rather not see.
A noisy heeled Jakelyn arrived back ice pack in hand. I took it from her gratefully and placed it on my aching jaw, soothing some of the pain.
Heavy footsteps and tense Nick and Jakelyn made me look up at brown eyes which once made my heart flutter but now filled it with pain.Well, shit.
Travis looked bad, really bad. Dark circles under his eyes indicated no sleep for days. My mouth hung open after seeing his state but I quickly cleared my head.
"Ari", he said, voice breaking slightly.
"What do you want?", I mustered up the coldest voice I could and saw Travis flinching."I-can we talk somewhere else in private?", Travis said glancing at Jakelyn.
"No", I said deadpanned, crossing my arms over my chest. His eyebrows furrowed further into his face, "Why not?", "Because I fucking said so. Now, can you leave?"
His arms were limp at his side and his hair was messy. It just wasn't the sexy messy I used to think it was.
"She said to leave, so go already", Nick intervened. Jakelyn nodded her head at what he said and I rolled my eyes."Was I talking to you, traitor?",Travis turned to Nick with a frown.
Jakelyn and I exchange glances when Nick laughs."A traitor? Look at where you're at and then tell me who's the traitor", he snarled back. "That's enough", I pushed Nick away from Travis who were both almost nose to nose. "Is there a problem here?", a man's voice asked behind me.
We turned around in annoyance at the interruption. Behind me stood the young teacher I noticed before, blue eyes shining with politeness. He had a blue buttoned short sleeve on which was loose enough to look casual but tight enough to show off figure and muscle.
Was there an English accent in his voice? I thought.
"Is everything alright?" he repeated, confirming my suspicion that he had an accent.
"No, it's all fine", Travis grumbled. I turned to glare at him and he huffed and walked away towards the seats.
"I don't think we've met?" the English boy asked."No, we haven't. I'm Arissa, this is Jakelyn and that over there", pointing behind me at an deflated Nick, "is Nick".
He revealed two rows of pearly whites along with a dimple. That's cute.
"Zack", he held out a hand and I quickly shook it. Zack's hand enveloped mine in a warm hug, sending me tiny electric tingles.
Fucking feels.
He shook the hands of people around and he introduced himself. Zack walked to the front and clapped his hands, gathering everyone's attention.
"Okay everyone, listen up. My name's Zack and I'll be your new hall monitor as well as assistant coach to those who play soccer",he announced. Suddenly his sky blue eyes found mine, captivating them."Nice to meet you".
