"Hmph!"
I let out a grunt as I hoisted the large barrel over my shoulder. I had woken up early at the request of Garret and was set to work, just as promised. I was told to restock the wine in the small tavern on the first floor of the inn. For the last half hour, I had been struggling to bring up the full barrels of wine from their wine cellar before, finally, Thom had come to help me out.
I passed the barrel of wine to Thom, who was at the top of the stairs. He stepped out of view for a couple of minutes before returning, ready for me to hand him another. Before long we had completely restocked their wine and were sitting down on the steps breathing deeply.
"So, Thom," I said between breaths. "That fireball thing you used yesterday. The magic. It was pretty cool!"
He looked at me with an eyebrow raised. "Yeah? Although it's just about all I can do in the magic department. I've always been more of a swordfighter than a magician."
So, swordfighters were a thing in this world. I guess that's to be expected. I hesitated, since he had just said he wasn't particularly good at it, but then asked, "Do you think you might be able to teach me?"
He looked at me carefully before saying, "I could try... But I won't be able to teach you much."
"That's fine. I just want to be able to do something if I ever come across some bandits again." I told him.
"Haha! If you want to protect yourselves against the bandits, you would be much better off having me teach you some sword fighting. Although that might take too long." He said with a smile. "By the way, how long are you planning on staying here? We don't really have a problem keeping you for a while, but..." He trailed off. "I'm just wondering what you're planning on doing after this with your memory loss and everything."
I frowned. What was I going to do? I could just stay here, but I wanted to see what the rest of the world was like. I mean, I'm in another world! I don't just want to sit in the same village my entire life.
Thom seemed to notice my frown and said, "I know this might sound a bit odd since I told you that Beastmen aren't really accepted in human society but... You could go become an adventurer."
I looked at him curiously. He had mentioned something about monsters yesterday. That Beastmen were human-Monster descendants. If monsters existed in this world, then it would make sense that fantasy-style adventurers existed.
"I always wanted to become an adventurer. I think I mentioned this before but, when I was a kid I lived with my aunt in the human empire for a while. It was rough since I was a Beastman, but I was always inspired by how cool the adventurers seemed. I made it my dream to one day join the adventurer's guild, but before long I had to return here." He looked at the old wooden ceiling.
"Since then, I have been practicing my sword fighting nonstop with the hopes that I might be able to still become an adventurer one day, although my pa is still against it. If your able to become an one, then maybe my pa will be able to see that a Beastman can become an adventurer. Plus, you have some pretty big magic reserves. It would give you quite an advantage over other adventurers. You'd probably be able to become a pretty accomplished adventurer."
I looked down at my hands. It would be pretty cool to become an adventurer. Not a bad way to spend my new life. I had always liked fantasy adventure games. "What about the whole Beastman thing. Wouldn't that be a problem if I go to live with humans?"
He gave me a grin, "That's one thing I can help you with regarding magic. I mentioned yesterday that there is a special kind of magic that allows you to hide your Beastlike qualities. Well, my aunt is actually a pretty accomplished magician. She is one of the few that know how to do it and can actually teach it. If you go to see her, she would probably be willing to teach you." He stood up. "Although for now, you'll probably be staying here a little while longer. I promise that once we are done with the day's work, I'll teach you some basic magic. Plus, a little swordplay.
