Dearest Belle,
The oddest thing happened today. I was driving home from work, having finished my day. It wasn't particularly eventful; all I did was inspect records of a youth's theft from a corner store. Our town's crime doesn't tend to get any worse than that, with the exception of yourself and your sister's case.
On the way home, I took a detour, to visit your old home. I don't know why, but I felt compelled to. Standing in front of it bought a wave of emotion, nostalgia for that which could have been, but never will be. I stood there stock still for goodness knows how long, only snapping out of my trance when a faint humming noise caught my attention; the tune of Silent Night.
I walked in the direction of the humming to investigate. Turning the corner of the street, I was surprised to find a young girl sitting cross-legged near the curb, reading a book propped open in her lap. It didn't take her long to notice me. When she did, she gave me a knowing smile, almost like she'd been expecting me. "You're all grown up," she said, her voice taking on a childish quality.
To say I was surprised would be an understatement. I did not recognise her, yet she seemed to recognise me. By the time I opened my mouth to ask how she knew me, she'd stood up and brushed herself down, leaving the book lying on the floor. "My name's Ivy," she said, cutting me off before I could ask my question. "And this diary belongs to you".
Then, she ran off, leaving the so-called diary behind. Utterly confused, I picked it up, not expecting the tide of emotion which came when I saw the initial - and below the initial, the name - on its cover.
I'm almost afraid to open it, but I know I have to, to get answers, if nothing else. Please Belle, if you can somehow read this, give me strength.
