chapter two / meadows of crimson and gold

"EMELIE" Draco Malfoy sighed contently, averting his eyes to the dazed blonde girl who sat next to him, staring absentmindedly at the blank piece of parchment in front of her, "Em."

It was only the first week of school, weak September sunlight and cool breezes flooding into the castle and creating an orange glow against the stone walls. Autumn was more-than-approaching and Emelie's dreams gradually faded and eventually disappeared all together.

"Yes? I'm awake, okay."

"Pay attention. I'm not going to help you."

"I don't need your help, Malfoy."

"I'm quite sure you will. Pay attention." Draco turned his eyes back to the blackboard. He held his head as high as always, not a care in the world as his quill soaked into the shared ink pot. It dances across the parchment, staining certain places dark and creating flawless lines.

"Oh, well fuck you." Emelie pressed her lips, picking up her own quill. Her gaze, however, darted from corner to corner as she examined the potions classroom. She should've been working, but the classroom gave off an entirely dreary disposition, one Emelie could not work in. Not in such circumstances.

It was either that or she just didn't want to, and Em was not going to admit to the latter.

Wandering glances fell upon an opposing pair of wide honey brown eyes a few rows away, some that were caught staring right back at her. Hermione Granger didn't notice for a quick second, not quite removing her eyes from Emelie's welcoming glances and tapping her finger on her thigh as she gazed, but when she did, her head went straight to her hands in embarrassment and her cheeks turned bright pink.

"Miss Pruitt, would you mind telling me the effect Draught of Peace has on a human body?" Snape's monotone manner pulled her out of the daydream she was having ( or was it? She couldn't tell )

"I— uh . . ." Em trailed off, awfully embarrassed by Snape's unexpected call out. Humiliation was not on her to-do list for today, especially not at the hand of Snape. A stiffened, cold laugh sound came from the boy who sat next to her and the sudden urge to strike the side of his face with her open palm grew.

"Hm. Refrain from ogling at Granger and using profound language in my classroom."

Hermione raised her hand, cheeks growing pinker by the second "Excuse me, Professor, if I may. Draught of Peace can do amazing things to the mind, relieving anxiety and agitation. But, it can also have multiple setbacks, such as casting the drinker into a deep sleep, if brewed incorrectly."
