Hazel Armstrong greeted Rebecca with the same smugness as she always did. They were never friends at school, but she repeatedly found time to come into the shop every week on the same day and at the same time. Like clockwork, as if doing the rounds.

Rebecca could have done without her visits and was rather tempted to close up shop on the day she came by, but that would not have been financially responsible.

Hazel always had something new to share and this time was no different.

Rebecca peered into the carriage and onto a sleeping newborn baby.

'His name is Adam.'

Rebecca whispered her welcome to the little one. Seeing him gave her the same feeling as one of her creations.

'He's an absolute darling, Rebecca, an absolute heavenly creature. He sleeps like a dream -as you can see- and he's as gentlemanly as his father.'

'He's a beautiful baby.'

'My goodness, Rebecca. You should have seen some of the other babies at the hospital. Ugly things.'

Without thinking, Rebecca covered up her scar.

'Motherhood is so amazing. And I hope one day you'll get to enjoy it. You're missing out, missing out on the wonders of life. Having a child is so incredible.'

'I'm sure it is.'

'Oh, but Rebecca. Only a mother can be sure of its magnificent.'

Rebecca knew what Hazel was doing. She had done it all her life, all the way back when they were in school together. And Hazel's performance would have sent her into the same abyss she fell down the other day, but she didn't have the energy to jump. She felt utterly numb from head to toe and heart to soul.

Little Adam began to cry.

'Oh, deary.' Hazel picked up her son and began rocking him close to her chest. 'What's wrong my angel? Is it time to go home? Time to eat?'

Rebecca grabbed a newly woven tulip, its serrated yet smooth petals looking like the tongues of fantastical dragons, and placed it in the carriage.

'A gift for Adam.'

As if forgetting her baby was crying his teeny heart out in her arms, Hazel marveled at the flower as though it was the only thing in the world. Rebecca knew that look.

'It's incredible. You have such talents.' There was a delicate quiver to Hazel's voice. 'Thank you.' She snapped out of her trance and blew out a laugh from her nose. 'Adam thanks you too.'
