Part One- A deathly melody

I don't go into the forest. Nobody does. But my curious nature wouldn't let the warnings from my mom and people around town stop me from at least walking to its edge.

"But I won't go in." I whispered to myself as I walked swiftly past the gates that surrounded my town.

The same gates my mother told me to never go past. The autumn wind picked up as I trudged through the tall grass that everyone was too afraid to cut and the long, thick blades swatted at my face and bare skin on my arms as I went. I was quick on my booted feet for fear that I'd be caught before I could make it to the edge but luck would be on my side that day.

Or so I thought.

My movements slowed once I finally made it, coming upon the forbidden forest like a cat seeking out it's prey. I was smart enough to be weary, the warnings I've heard over the years forever pounding at the outskirts of my brain, but I wasn't smart enough to heed those warnings.

One foot, two and I was finally there.

Right at the edge.

Laid out before me: huge trees that seemed to reach the sky, with wide, peeling trunks, all standing in a perfect row. Almost like pillars you'd find lined up around a castle or some Greek fortress. I peered beyond the pillar trees, careful not to cross, but couldn't see any thing out of the ordinary. It seemed like a normal forest. I heard birds rustle and chirp in the tree tops, sun rays shown through the canopy, sparkling and setting the forest aglow with its natural light as squirrels chased each other from trunk to trunk. It all seemed so....normal. I couldn't understand why everyone was so afraid of it, so frightened of it that they'd strike fear into their children before they could even talk.

Why so afraid?

Ignoring the warnings, and my better judgement, I walked past the pillar trees and...nothing. No monsters jumped me, no spooky fog settled around my feet, it was just a forest. I was a bit disappointed to say the least, but I shrugged it off then turned to leave.

Just before I crossed back over is when I heard it, low at first but I could definitely hear a slow, melodic tune being carried my way, and a silky voice accompanying it.

"What is that?" I said to myself.

I couldn't quite make out the words but the melody was mesmerizing. I closed my eyes and let the music wrap around me, lulling me into a false sense of security. My feet moved but I never opened my eyes, I would let that song lead me anywhere it wanted, it was so beautiful. As I got closer to the singer and her instrument the words to her song became clearer.
