I spun around to find Embry and his companion now sitting up and side by side on his narrow bed. I eyed them carefully, trying to determine how angry he was. When I opened my mouth to speak, Keegan cut me off.

"I'm sorry," she whispered, letting her head hang a bit. "Paul dropped off your assignments and he told me to wait in the truck. I totally didn't listen."

"Hmm," Embry began as he crossed his arms over his chest. "That totally doesn't sound like you at all."

Keegan pushed out her lower lip and pouted when we laughed at her. "Okay, Mr. Smarty Pants. You're so funny, huh?"

"I think he is," the girl beside him commented quietly.

"Sorry, guys. This is my friend, Rebecca."

We smiled and waved at her and I shot Embry a questioning look. "Scored you a nurse there, Embry?"

She laughed. "No. I'm not a nurse yet. Just in high school like you guys. I'm volunteering for a vocational program. I'll be studying sports medicine next year in college."

Embry gave me another look that let me know maybe this girl didn't know how young he actually was. We stayed to talk for a while until his dinner came.

"We should head out and let you eat. I'll be back tomorrow with your assignments, okay man?" I leaned forward to give him a fist bump and a smile. It was good to see him looking better and I wondered how much of that was due to his new friend.

"No need to bring me anything here anymore. I'm being released tomorrow as long as everything goes as planned.

"That's great!" Keegan gushed. "So you'll be back to school soon?"

"If he has things his way," Rebecca retorted. "I think the doctor would prefer he take it easy a few more weeks."

"Well...we'll see I guess," Embry smirked as Rebecca fussed over him, getting his food onto his tray and situating it in front of him.

"Well I guess we'll see you around," Keegan told him as we made our way to the door.

"Hey, Kee."

She turned to face him, sighing deeply when he held his arms open for a hug. "Come here," he urged gently.

I only felt a slight pang of jealousy when she fell into his arms and I saw Embry whisper into her ear. I could almost see her relief in the way she buried herself in the crook of his neck. I knew Keegan had felt bad about Embry's accident and the fact that he wouldn't even let her come visit was making it worse.

Now it looked like they were back on track to be friends again. At least I hoped that was all it was. Rebecca's gaze slid over to me while they hugged and it made me wonder how serious she was about him. Was she jealous? Did she want me to stop them?

I tried to exude confidence in what I had with Keegan, but I supposed I would always feel a little jealous when it came to Embry.

"Ready, babe?" I finally prompted, earning me a thankful look from Rebecca.
