-- Sara's POV --
My mind fluttered in and out of memories as I paced back and forth the long hallway.I hugged myself tightly as if to protect myself from the memories.
He was gone, and I couldn't stop it. All I did was watch, frozen in a baracade of Zs upstairs.
It happend over a month ago, which felt like a year these days, I should be over it.
But I couldn't just forget my brother like that.A loud scream echoed the walls, snapping me out of the painful reverie.
My eyes great wide as I instinctly began rummaging through the living room, arming myself with a long bladed and a short bladed knife,a fully loaded revolver, and my brothers-now my-rifle.
I opened the door to see thirty-fifty Zs running towards something. They didn't see me,though.
Keeping a decent pace,I set the rifle comfortably on my shoulder and started fireing accurate shots, putting down Z after Z until I could make out what they were chasing. It looked like a group of about five or so people. They weren't shooting, even though they carried guns, maybe they had no ammo left.I positioned myself again and started shooting.I was getting closer to the Zs now and they started to notice me.Some of them turned around and started for me, I slipped the rifle back over my shoulder and took out the revolver.Getting closer, I took them out only to see more coming towards me.But the same amount still chased the people, who now noticed me as well and were fighing the Zs and coming towards me.
I shoved the revolver inside my belt again, deciding to take the vicious route and fight through them.Getting a good grip of the two knives,I started putting them down.I turned around for a second to see more and more coming towards me.
I spun to the people who were now in shouting reach, "Hey!" I yelled, retriving the revolver and throwing it to the nearest person. An old man caught it and gave me a thumbs up.
There were too many Zs to fight, they were coming in from everywhere. We needed to get higher or we might not make it.
I knew this town like the back of my hand, and how to easily get onto the roofs,I could only hope we had the time to get there together.
I made a run for the nearest shop, which was luckily only ten or so feet away from where I stood, and in the direction of the group.
I didn't have time to catch my breath as I neared the shop, the group only a few feet away from there, "Follow me,now!" I yelled as loud as I could, not turing back to see who was coming.
But I heard running and breathing behind me.I looked over for only a second and took a sigh of relief to see them all...but then a sigh of sorrow to see Zs still coming.I stepped back a few feet to give myself a bit of running room before I pulled myself onto the tiny labber that hung seven feet off the ground. It took a lot out of me,but I managed to get my full body onto the labber and climbed it effortlessly.
I pulled myself onto the cold, gravel roof and stepped back to let the others have room.
I sprinted over to the edge of the roof on the store's front...I nearly screamed of frustration at how many Zs we attracted. There were nearly a hundred now.I turned around to face the people I'd just saved.
They were all sitting on the ground, catching breath.Except for a zombie-looking man and a beautiful, dark women. On the ground there was the old man I gave the gun to,a young women who looked very tired, and to my surprise,a very attractive, young man who layed on his back with a rifle across his chest.
It was terrible timing, but I couldn't help but notice how his shirt lifted an inch past his belt, revealing just a glimpse of his hips.I shook my head, turning back to the Zs.
"What's the damage?" The women said, coming up beside me.
I simply gestured with my hand for her to look, "We need a plan,"
She sighed, turning to me, "I'm Roberta, thank you for helping us."
"I'm Sara, and its no problem..kind of."
Roberta smiled at that and turned sideways to the group behind her.
"That's Doc," She said, pointing to the man, "Thats Cassandra," The sick one, "Murphy, the burden," Zombie guy, "And that's 10k."
I scrunched my nose, "His name is a number?"
"Its how many zombies he's going to kill!" Doc said with pride in his voice.
10k pulled himself to his feet, making his way to where we stood, my body tensed as he neared."What are we going to do?" Roberta asked me.
I blushed as I realized everyone was now looking at me.I started to feel the explosion inside me, I knew these people couldn't depend on me...the last time someone did that...
I swollowed my thoughts and faced the group with the best fearless face I could muster."Someone needs to lead them away.None of us have the ammo to take them out,and there are to many to spike even with all of us." I didn't stutter,my voice kept strong.
"What do you suggest?" 10k said next to me.He was staring straight into my eyes.I didn't know what I saw in the stare, but it made me look away.
"Who's the best shot here? Best runner?" I asked Roberta.
Everyone pointed to 10k.
"Okay, you,me and someone else...we have to lead these Zs away."
"Doc,Cassandra..and Murphy can't leave.And I can't leave Murphy." Roberta debated.
I tilted my head, "Is he special or something?" I said, referring to Murphy."Yes.He's the only known survivor of a Z bite.We are on a mission to bring him to a lab in California, where a vaccine will be made...basically he's the last hope for the human race." Raborta said.
"Right..." I turned to 10k, "Looks like its just you and me."
"What exactly are we going to do?" He asked.
I fumbled with the loop of my jeans,a nervous habit,as I thought through the plan more.
"We're going to get off this roof and run as fast and loudly as we can. Then we are going to survive while the rest find shelter at my place until we get back." I studied our options of survival.I knew I could do it,and if 10k is as good as they claim,he would hopefully stay by my side.Roberta nodded in agreement. "Why help us so thoroughly? You could leave,"
I didn't falter as I flatly said, "I'm not letting anyone else down again."
"Are you a good shot?" Roberta asked, "10k's run out of ammo, and I see you have a rifle, but can you shoot it?"
I nodded slowly, turning on my heal to face the Zs. I rested the rifle againest my shoulder and aimed for the furthest Z I could spot-at least seventy feet away-and shot it straight through the head.
I slipped the gun over my back again, turning back to the group.
"There is an old sherrifs station up the road a ways," I said to 10k, "If we can make it, there might be some ammo in there."
He nodded.I turned to Roberta, "My house is just up the road, look for the electrified fence."I started making my way to the back of the building,10k at my side.I turned around to the group one last time, "Good luck,"
Then me and 10k started desending from the rooftop.
