Quinn watched as Ms. Mary got taken away kicking and screaming. It bothered Quinn that she was used to this. At least once a week one of her neighbors was taken away to the Spires. Quinn didn't even bother talking to her neighbors anymore. She practically got a new set of neighbors every week so there was no point in getting attached. Secretly Quinn hoped that another kid would show up one day, even though she knew it would never happen. Besides everyone got taken to the Spires, Quinn's own parents were taken away. Quinn had realized there was a pattern, someone would cry and the next day they would be taken away to the Spires. Quinn's own parents had got taken to the Spires and she barely remembered them.
Quinn wasn't even sure what happened at the Spires, but she could assume. All she knew was that no one came back from the Spires, ever. Quinn wasn't even sure where they got food from. All her life the Spires had loomed over her, waiting for her to have a moment of weakness and for a tear to slip down her cheek. Quinn wasn't going to give in. She planned to escape to the surface world, she just didn't know how.
