We were freaks
oddities even within our own
juggling depression and loneliness
swinging from the wires of self-hate and suicide
chasing lies in circles like animals
the ringmaster of an abandoned world
Surrounded
by the ones who tried to help
who said that rhyme
about sticks and stones
and broken bones
and words may never hurt them
But
the names we got called
the pain that they caused
don't tell me
that hurts less than a broken bone
I would know; circus life brings both
