Day 1

Do you believe in superheroes? No, I'm not talking about Superman or Spiderman or Captain America. That's all in the movies. I mean real-life superheroes that you can reach out and pinch. If you don't, there's a good chance my story isn't for you.

Before we go any further, allow me to introduce myself! I'm Zoe Cortez; just a completely average high school girl. Or... at least I was. One faithful day during my current summer break kinda turned my whole life upside down. Now I'm the official self-appointed protector of my hometown, Los Angeles. Not many people notice me, but the ones that do call me WeatherGirl. Ok ok, nobody's noticed me, BUT when they do, that's what I'll tell them to call me!

First, let's get down to the basics. I was taking out the trash on a stormy afternoon trying not to inhale any toxic fumes when I got struck by red lightning. Yeah, you heard me, RED LIGHTNING. Now, believe me when I tell you I wish I was joking when I told you it gave me literal superpowers.

I woke up the next morning in a hospital bed surrounded by my anxious family. Well, my mom and dad were anxious; my little sister Scarlett honestly looked like she had better things to do than make sure I was okay. Sisters, am I right?

Anyways, when they noticed I was awake they gave me a big hug and they said things like

"Oh, sweetie we're so glad you're okay!"

"We were so scared you wouldn't wake up!"

Ya know, standard worried parents stuff

Then there was the one;

"Yay, you're awake! Can we go to the arcade now?"

That last one was Scarlett. What did I tell ya, couldn't care less.

A nurse came in shortly after my family let me breathe again and it's safe to say she didn't expect to see me..... Like at all... Like on a scale from 1 to 10 her shock was a 57;

"Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Cortez... Oh! You're awake! I'll get the doctors you try and relax honey" she said

A doctor came in and gave me a quick check-up:

Checked my heartbeat with a stethoscope,

Shined that unreasonably bright flashlight into my eyes and ears,

Used that teeny tiny hammer to check my reflexes,

And finally a thermometer in my mouth

"Um Mr. and Mrs. Cortez, may I speak with you?" the doctor said leading my parents through the door to the room

Ya know when people are trying to whisper but you can hear everything they're saying? Yep...

"There's nothing wrong with her!" the doctor whisper-shouted

"But I don't understand, isn't that a good thing?" my mom inquired

"Yes. People who survive lightning strikes are very lucky but they've never been THIS okay. There's something... extraordinary about her." the doctor said

"Well, her blood type is one of a kind if that's what you mean." my mom explained

"Yeah, we've never found anyone else in the same group. All the doctors we've seen say she might be one of few people in this world that have it." my dad added

"Tell me more." the doctor replied

Everything they said after that they ACTUALLY whispered. Shocker, I know.

When they came back in the room all they told me was I was being discharged and we were free to go

"Awesome! Let me just put on my shoes and we can get outta here." I said leaping off the bed. Guess I overestimated how 'okay' I really was because once my feet touched the ground  I lost my balance. Luckily, my dad was standing there and he caught me. Then my mom got a wheelchair and we headed home. By the time we got back, my legs had enough energy to carry me inside

No matter how 'good' they said I was, I felt weird. Like a million volts of electricity were continuously coursing through my bones. Yeah maybe that was just a side-effect of getting struck by literal lightning and that's what I thought too until a certain series of events showed me otherwise

For starters, when I tried to open my bedroom door, it shocked me! That kind of shock you get when you're out on the playground on a hot day going down the metal slide then you touch another person. But trust me when I tell you this one was wayyyy worse. My hand was actually smoking. Honestly, I didn't really care that much. Like the doctor said, I was lucky to be alive and if that meant I got a little tingle every time I opened a door, so be it.

The weirdness didn't end there. I was in front of a mirror in the bathroom checking out the lightning scars on my arm then I bent my elbow to sneeze. By the time I looked back up at the mirror, there was a scorch mark on it. You can't convince me in 5 million years that was a coincidence.

At this point, I knew something- didn't know what- was off. Then the worst of all happened; my clothes started changing BY THEMSELVES. My comfy sweats were transforming into some sort of costume. I thought I was hallucinating so I frantically washed my face to snap myself out of it. Looked back up at the mirror and my hair had random highlights in them not to mention I was wearing a mask.

'Okay, this definitely isn't a hallucination I told myself then I started examining my new look.

If I'm being completely honest, it was kinda cute and I didn't hate it.

It was mostly black with light purple accents and details here and there.  I was wearing a super cute mini skirt with tights and boots and a crop top that had the initials 'WG' on it. Surrounding the WG were strange symbols that at the time, I was too distracted to decode. Also, not part of the story, but how did it know I was gonna call myself WeatherGirl? Would the initials have changed if I had decided on something like uhh Meteorology Lady? Alright, I'll stop getting sidetracked now

I took my hair out of its messy bun and those highlights were amazing! I could've sworn for half a second they were glowing. Of course, they were light purple to match the subtle hints on the rest of my look. Not only did this newfound magic make my hair super colorful, but it also made it thick and wavy and all-around AMAZING. I looked myself in the eyes but I couldn't recognize a single thing. This wasn't the awkward, nerdy girl I prided myself as. This girl was confident, strong, and independent to say the least.

My trance was broken by loud knocks at the door.

"Zoe! I need to go!!" squeaked Scarlett from the other side

That's when I went full panic mode

"Uhhh I'm coming to gimme a second!" I called back shakily

How was I supposed to explain that I decided to have a spontaneous costume party in our bathroom?! And what else was I supposed to tell them? That the lightning I miraculously survived gave me a new look?!

I did the only reasonable thing; put on a robe and a shower cap, opened the door hiding my face, and ran for my life to my room.

That brought me back down to reality. This was crazy! I couldn't just walk around looking like a whole entire circus. I tried EVERYTHING to get off that outfit

Tried yanking it off- fail

Tried waiting it out as if there was a secret timer somewhere- fail

Heck, I was so desperate I even tried open sesame and abracadabra!

Then I started spouting absolute nonsense. I figured there was some sort of code word but I had no idea what it was about. I might've gone through half the dictionary

' Pineapple, disappear, waterfall, monkey, French toast, wine glass, Pina colada, deactivate-'

And as you probably guessed, that last one did the trick. In the blink of an eye, my costume was gone. I belly-flopped onto my bed and let out a sigh of relief. Little did I know, the worst was yet to come.

Hey guys! Lav here. How do you like this new story so far? I've had this idea for a while but I never really developed it so I decided why not. That's all for now, have a magical rest of your day and I'll see you next time! Baii :3
