Raivis pulled his jacket around his shoulders more tightly, the wind blowing against him was cold, giving him a chill. His cousin had given him the task of going out to the nearby field to collect some things for his sick aunt.
He finally arrived in the field, looking around himself. Though it was cold, the flowers stuck up around him, as pretty as ever. He saw some of the herbs he was sent to find and began to walk to them, but stopped halfway there. In front of him, a little past the herbs, stood a girl. She had blonde hair and wore a pink dress and she stood stood with her back to him, her hands clasped together against her chest. The wind seemed not to touch her, and while everything around her blew to the left, her clothes stayed perfectly still. But what Raivis found strangest, was that she seemed to be translucent; he could see the hills rising up through her.
She seemed to be staring off at nothing as she stood completely still in the grass, but as he moved closer he saw that she was not, in fact, standing so much as floating a little above the ground. He walked to her until he was right behind her before opening his mouth. "Miss?" She spun around, her eyes startled, green orbs. She backed away a little, staring at him as if he had two heads.
"Y-you can see me?" She asked, her eyes wide. He nodded, transfixed by her eyes. His cousin would later tell him that that was often, in stories, called 'love at first sight'.
Her lips parted in silent shock as she stared at him. Slowly, her lips widened into a smile. Her smile was what got him. It was the reason that, after that day, he kept visiting her.
"M-my name is Raivis." He stammered, hoping to bring the girl to talk to him, but in a few moments the smiled was gone and she turned and ran away from him.
With a heavy heart, he picked the herbs and began to trudge back to his home, forgetting about the cold. The whole night, he couldn't sleep. He couldn't stop thinking about the girl. From what he had seen, she was probably a ghost, but he'd so wanted to talk to her. Ghosts were supposed to be fictional but his grandmother had always told him that they were real. He hadn't believed her until now. He decided that he would go back to the field the next day in the hopes of once again catching a glimpse of her.
The next morning when he woke up, he quickly remembered his decision and climbed out of bed, hurrying downstairs to eat and complete his morning chores, before running back upstairs to change. Once that was done, he walked to the door and slipped on his shoes, racing out of the house and down the lane.
When he arrived, again, at the field, he looked around. His heart fell when he saw no signs of the girl. Just as he was about to turn and leave, he saw a flash of blonde from behind a tree in the small forest that was next to the field. "Miss!" He called out hopefully, jogging towards the spot he saw her. As he got closer, he could see her head poking out from behind an old oak tree. He smiled and took another step closer, but she took a step back, worry in her eyes. So he stopped, not wanting to push her, and sat down cross legged in the grass. And then he started talking. He talked for a long while, losing track of the time. He wasn't normally a talker, but the ghost would not speak again so he was willing to talk if it meant she would stay and listen. Finally he noticed the sun going down and stood up, waving goodbye to her. "I'll come back tomorrow!" He called out. "Please be here!" And with that he reluctantly turned and left. But he kept coming back to her, whenever he could, and slowly but surely, she was allowing him closer to her. One day, exactly a year from when he first saw her, the Latvian made his way down the road, a bunch of flowers clutched to his back. He saw her on the other side of the field, kneeling in the grass and her hands clasped on her knees. He slowly made his way over to her, staring down at his feet. He finally neared her, looking up so that he could see her. He walked slower, seeing how close she would allow him to walk.
She finally held up a hand to stop him, when they were within arms reach. He nodded and seated himself on the grass across from her. "Hello again miss." He began. "It's umm... Do you know what today is?" He knew she wouldn't answer so he just pushed on. "It's the one year anniversary of our first meeting." He told her, bringing the bunch of flowers out from behind his back. Her eyes widened a fraction as he held them out, but she reached one hand out to touch them.
As her fingers met with the green leaves of the flowers, the strangest thing happened. Colour slowly travelled through her fingertips and up her arm until her whole body was solid. Her eyes widened and a smile found it's way to her face. There were tears in her eyes as she threw herself towards him, wrapping her arms around his neck. "I'm alive!" She cried. And Raivis smiled, hugging her back.
"Your name, miss?" He asked, a hopeful smile playing across his lips.
"My name... Lilli."
