From the tips of her fingers to the soles of her boots, determination flowed through her entire being. It formed her expression and lifted her blade. It moved her legs and forced away her doubts.
It is this trait, this firmness of purpose, that fuels the fire of ideas, dreams if you will. Prehapes it is an act of pure will power, or stubbernice. Maybe its nothing extraordinary at all, simply another invention of the creator to add some sort of meaning to our small lives. Well, meaningful or not, determination is something little Toad never lacked.
One could even say she had an excessive amount of it. In fact, the only thing Toad never bothered to try very hard at was keeping her hair neat, causing the thick brunette curls atop her head to tangle and poof up into a large mess. One could get lost in such a mess, if not careful.
Despite her lack of personal hygiene when it comes to hair, in all other situations Toad was sure to be the best! Well, sure to TRY to be the best, at least. When she was but a child, her potions teacher ordered all the little children in his classroom to bring a vial of any potion they had learned to brew in the past month after the weekend. Well, Toad being Toad, attempted to create every single potion they had learned to brew in the past month. And she would have done a great job too! If it wasnt for the deadline, of course, which made her rush to finish every potion as fast as she could. When Toad came into class on monday with arms full of potions, every single one missing at least something or stirred wrong, one could only feel bad for the childs lame idea. You could say it wouldnt be that big of a deal, if the purple one didn't blow up in the teachers face when he opened it. Much to her surprise, Toad received a "D" in that specific class.
Much later, when Toad reached the ripe old age of 12, her father gifted to his daughter a cherry tree. Determined to become the best tree care giver ever, Toad made sure to water her tree at breakfast, lunch, AND dinner. So, when Toads tree began to wilt, and eventually die, she was both confused and devistated. Hadnt she taken good enough care of it? Her father made sure to explain to Toad that she shoudlnt water a tree three times a day. And, while Toad never drowned a tree again, she was known to overwater them because "what if theyre thirsty and they just cant tell me?".
Although it was found enduring when she was a child, once Toad got older she began to be excluded for being "over-excitable" and "annoying". She always messed up group projects, or any project at all. Simple games of basketstone turned into games of "Basket-oh no I didn't even know arms bended that way stone". So, because children are awful creatures, The other students at her school gave her the nickname, "overgrown fish" or "fish" for short((Amphibians are very sensitive about their taxonomic status))
This upset Toad immensely. Despite her not actually being a Toad, her mother did very much like them, (or at least enough to name her only child after them, what a strange and peculiar name!) and insulting such a lovely innocent species is very rude.
She never did anything less then her very best, so why was she still the worst at everything she did? One day, Toad went to her favorite teacher, Mx. Celleio,(a slime person who for some reason enjoyed wearing wigs) who taught Vravogian history, to see if they could help her with her problem. After the last bell rang at the end of the day, instead of walking home Toad made her way to Mx. Celleios classroom.
Once she came to a certain large wooden door with an image of a glob carved into it, Toad knocked three times, and said through the door, "Mx. celleio! Are you available for a chat?" after a moment, a muffled deep voice called out, "Ah, one moment please!".
The sound of papers being fixed and chairs moving could be heard, and then footsteps to the door. Toad took two steps back as the door swung out, reveling a tall somewhat see-through individual with messy pink hair to their shoulders(one side was slightly longer then the other, due to the wig being crooked), and a wrinkled standard teachers uniform.
"Well hello there young Toad! How may I help you this beautiful morning?"
to this Toad responded, "its raining outside, and its 3:30 in the afternoon. I would also like to step inside, if you would allow me to do so."
mx. Celleios face scrunched up and they mumbled, "ah.I suppose My minds a bit foggy today, huh? Oh! And yes, please do come in." stepping out of the way, Mx. celleio made an opening for toad to walk through, and walk through she did. Toad made her way into the classroom and sat down at the desk closest to the teachers desk. Mx. Celleio followed her lead and sat down at the teachers desk and resumed sorting the mess of papers.
"So." started Mx. Celleio. "Whats on your mind Toad?"
"Do you think I suck at everything."
"Yes." responded Mx. Celleio without hesitation. Though after Looking up from sorting and seing the look on Toads face, they immediately changed their answer. "AH. I mean yes! NO! I mean no! Not no to no to yes but no to yes to your question, which i was being honest answering, but also no, because i dont think you suck! I was just saying, um-"
Toad sighed. "Its okay. You can be honest. I guess I was just hoping you can tell me how to suck less."
Mx. Celleio cringed and replyed, "i dont think you suck Toad, I think you may be a little overexcitable is all." "yea, so ive been told."
"Oh, um. Im not-"
"Listen," said toad, "i already know theres something wrong with me, just tell me what i need to do to fix it." To this Mx. Celleio replied,
"its not mmeccacerally a bad thing Toad, and you dont have to "fix" anything about yourself. However, you may start to feel better if you channel all of that determination into something that can handle, well, you."
Toad threw her Arms up and said,
"Channl? Ive tried all sorts of channel stuff! I even did basketstone last year."
This made Mx. Celleio perk up. "Basketstone? I was the best player back in my day! Tell me, did you enjoy it?"
"No, after causing four concussions and a broken arm i wasnt allowed to play anymore."
"Oh. um..."
"Yea. one of them was my own teammate."
"Oh. competitive much?"
"I suppose."
Mx. Celleio snapped their fingers. "Well darn. Have you ever joined a Choir?"
Toads eyes darkened and she whispered, "never again."
A moment of Toad staring darkly at the wall and Mx Celleio awkwardly shuffling papers went by before Mx. cellio said, "penny for your thoughts?"
"What I'm thinking about is worth at least a dollar." Replied Toad. "Trust me, what happened in Choir must never be said out loud."
With a sigh, Mx. Celleio said,"Toad, I really dont know what to do for you."

...

" Have you ever tried being part of the guard trainees?"
Toad perked up, seemingly forgetting about whatever she was currently thinking about. "Guard Trainees? Why, I dont believe ive ever even thought of it! They train to become guards in the kings army and guard, correct?"
Mx. Celleio nodded. "That is correct, however I have heard it's extremely difficult to pass the final test."
"Hm." Hummed Toad. "What is this final test you speak up?"
Mx. Celleio responded, "the final test is something all guard trainees do, no matter their rank. It's where all the trainees of your rank get together and fight one on one fights, all the winners will proceed to the next rank, and eventually, the best of the best surpass the final rank and become beginning guards in the kings army. "
"Oh wow." Replied Toad. "What happens to the losers?"
"Nothing I suppose," answered the Slime teacher.
"It's a fight to the death, after all."
"OH WOW." Said Toad once again.
"I do believe I will look into this more at home. Thank you for your time Mx. Celleio!"
"Any time Toad!"
Mx. Celleio led Toad to the door and waved goodbye, and Toad made her way home as fast as she could.
