There had to be something. Something Blaire was hiding here. Charlotte quickly shuffled through Blaire’s drawers, searching for something, anything, that would guide Charlotte in the direction of Blaire’s secret. A diary, maybe?

No. Blaire hated the very idea of a diary. She knew Blaire, she knew everything about Blaire, even if there was one secret she had been hiding from Charlotte - even Tyler. Charlotte knew that much. She never kept anything from Charlotte and definitely nothing from Tyler.

He would find out, anyway. It was as if that boy had a sixth sense. His mind was not limited to books. He saw things no one else could. She could sense it whenever he looked at something. How could he not know of this, though? He was her twin. She had to of told him at some point and Tyler never forgot a damn thing. He even remembers what necklace she wore when they briefly met for the first time ten years ago.

Or maybe Blaire was just that secretive?

She was still shuffling when, magically, a small, leather bound journal unearthed itself. Charlotte stared at it for a moment as if she had just discovered the meaning of life. It almost felt as if she had.

Charlotte gently picked up and was surprised on the weight of the little thing. It was the size of her hand and weighed nearly two pounds. She cracked it open, finding hundreds of pages of scribbles and dates. There were a few pieces of loose papers stuffed inside, as well. One fell to the floor and Charlotte quickly picked it up.

It was a picture of Blaire and Tyler. They were standing on a shoreline, the ocean visible on the left side. Tyler was looking over at Blaire, smiling wide. The edges of his eyes were crinkled, displaying true happiness. He wasn’t wearing his glasses. God damn, she thought to herself, her heart warming. He was beautiful.

Blaire was bent over slightly, one hand holding her side as her other hand rested on his forearm. She was laughing - hard - at something and her curly, red hair was slightly blown by a faint wind. It was a captivating picture.

Charlotte’s eyes returned to the frozen image of Tyler, her heart picking up in speed. She always had a thing for her best friend’s twin brother. She couldn’t help it. How could she not? He was beautiful in more ways than just his appearance -

There was a creek. It was soft and hardly audible, but it was still a sound. The sound of Blaire coming up the steps. In panic, Charlotte slammed the journal shut, quickly debating between shoving back in its rightful place, or to put it in her backpack.

Do the right thing, or do the Charlotte thing.

Remain unknown, or discover all of the secrets.

Betray her best friend, or satisfy her cravings as a best friend.

The time was ticking.

Charlotte shoved the journal in her backpack just as the door creaked open and a lock of red hair spilled out. Shortly after, a pair of silver eyes locked with Charlotte’s own. She hoped they didn’t give anything away.

“Am I still in trouble?” Blaire’s innocent voice wafted through the air, settling the frantic nerves within Charlotte. She inwardly exhaled a breath of relief.

“No, no you are not.” Charlotte smiled warmly as Blaire allowed the rest of herself in until she was sitting beside Charlotte. She didn’t want to talk about the incident anymore. She had everything she needed to know two inches away from her legs. There was a guilt creeping slowly into the back of Charlotte’s head, but she kept it at a distance. She didn’t come this far for nothing.

“I have a question, though.” Charlotte started, though her smile gave her away instantly. Blaire knew exactly what Charlotte was going to say, and unfortunately, that is the price to pay when having a best friend.
