Chapter 12: The Wedding
Ginny woke up on the morning of the 28th with a nervous feeling. Today would be the day where her plan would be moved into the spotlight, dragging Harry and Hermione with it. She knew that Gabrielle would make her move tonight, and Harry would fall for it. There was no way that Harry could resist the young blonde half veela. Ginny smiled to herself. If I can't have Harry, everyone else will hate him she thought. She started getting ready for the wedding, not being able to await the outcome of the day's events.
Harry woke up early on the day of the wedding. He was forced to since Hermione had made it a point to get up early to get ready.
"Come on Mione. The wedding isn't until 4pm. You can't seriously need 9 hours to get ready for a wedding do you?" he croaked sleepily.
"Well I need to make myself look good. It is going to take a while to tame the hair and get everything done to perfection. You don't understand because you're a guy" she replied.
"You look beautiful anytime Mione, you don't need to try hard. As for the hair, It looks good messy. You wouldn't be Hermione without it. Now come back to bed. I was comfortable the way I was" he said. Her eyes darted towards him and she broke out in a smile. He's so cute when he is half asleep. He just called me beautiful again, but that must be the sleep with the lack of comfort talking. Wait, the lack of comfort? He was comfortable sleeping with me in his arms, does that mean anything?
"Thanks Harry. That's sweet, but it won't change my mind. I'm still going to go get ready and see if Fleur needs any help. I hope that nothing happens that could ruin this day for her." Harry turned over and looked at her. He propped himself up on one arm and watched her getting ready. She was scrambling around trying to find everything. He saw her grab the covered dress from the closet. She hung it up near the flap of the tent. She looks so cute right now. I wonder if she is going to look like that at her wedding. He couldn't stop the thought, but he didn't care. She stopped halfway through digging through her trunk and looked at him
Why does he have that grin plastered on his face like that? she wondered. "What's so amusing Harry?" she asked.
Oh shit. He just laughed. "What can I say, I find you amusing. Running around like this, I can't help but wonder how you are going to act on your wedding day. I mean if you are getting up 9 hours early for being a bridesmaid, are you even going to sleep the night before for yours?" he laughed until a pillow hit him. This caused him to laugh even harder. He rolled onto his back and closed his eyes. He felt the cot beside him sag and felt her roll back in next to him. He opened one eye and looked next to him. She curled up into his arm.
"Fine. You convinced me. I guess I could go for a couple more hours of sleep." She smiled at him and he smiled back. She snuggled closer and drifted back into a peaceful sleep. He closed his eye and relaxed again, falling back into his dreams.
He woke up a few hours later with Hermione still next to him. He opened his eyes and looked towards her. He saw that she was awake, but hadn't noticed him yet. He could tell she was thinking about something important, she had that look about her. She was staring at nothing in particular and had her brow furrowed in concentration.
Hermione hadn't slept too much longer than the first time. She wanted to get up, but she also liked where she was. She couldn't understand why she felt so safe in his arms. She didn't want to ever leave them. I can't really be falling for Harry, can I? That would ruin everything, well unless Ginny had a sudden change of heart. I really don't know why she hasn't come around yet. Even Ron has realized that there is nothing going on, that this is strictly platonic. She is a fool. I guess people do stupid things when they are in love. 'Yes, like sleeping in the same bed as their 'best friend' in the house of the people who would shoot the pair of them if they found out.' The voice came back. She was struggling to figure out her feelings as she noticed that Harry was awake. "Oh, you're awake now? I think it has to be nearly 11 now. Is that late enough to get your approval to get up and start getting ready?" she laughed.
"I guess that is just on the edge of the limit. I guess I will let you go." He smiled at her and lowered his arm, allowing her to get up. She rested a moment longer and finally rolled out of the bed. He noticed the hesitation. She walked across the room and grabbed her dress and the rest of her clothes. As she pulled open the flap, she took one more glance at him and blushed when she realized he was staring at her. She quickly took her leave of the tent, leaving a smiling Harry to go back to sleep.
He tried a couple more times to get comfortable and fall asleep, but anytime he felt remotely comfortable, he couldn't sleep. The one time he managed to fall asleep, he woke up 5 minutes later after loud voices were heard coming from the kitchen. He gave up on his efforts to more sleep, she would have to pay for that later. He swung his feet out of the bed and looked around. He saw his dress robes hung up near the end of the bed. I really hope that nothing goes wrong today. Would Voldemort really choose to attack with that many wizards around, especially after losing a good chunk of his men the last time they came? I wouldn't forgive myself if something happened to Bill or Fleur on their wedding day. He sighed to himself and stood up, leaving the tent. He was happy to see that the sky was completely cloud-free, and the sun was shining brightly, making everything look perfect.
As Harry walked into the kitchen, he heard Arthur and Molly talking. Arthur said "Molly dear. We won't have to worry about that again, really. The Minister is attending, as much as I dislike the idea, but he will be bringing a lot more power with him. If You-Know-Who is planning to attack today, he is a fool. He had enough trouble trying to take down a group of people who wouldn't be ready for an attack in his thoughts. Now, if he attacks, there are going to be at least 50 Aurors standing around the property and all the guests themselves. What's more, Harry is going to be around. If any of his servants made it back, they are bound to have told him how Harry performed the other night. Now that his 17th is even closer, his power will start to grow even more." Arthur stopped as he noticed Harry enter. "We will discuss this more later Molly. Let's just leave it as nothing will happen." Arthur gave Molly a glare and Molly turned to finish breakfast. What did he mean by 'his power will start to grow even more'? Harry wondered. Before he could say anything more, women were popping up everywhere he looked. He made himself content with sitting at the table and eating, watching the chaos unfold.
For the next 3 hours, Harry sat around the kitchen talking with Mr Weasley about nothing in particular and watching the girls go back and forth. Every time that Hermione entered the room, Harry could hardly hear what Mr Weasley was saying. He would watch her, and he noticed that she had started to change gradually over the day. She wasn't in her pyjamas anymore, and next thing he knew she had taken a shower. Not too long after, she came down with a potion in one hand and the other massaging it into her hair. A little while later, she was getting Mrs Weasley to help her fix her hair properly and made it go up into a bun. Next thing Harry knew, he was being shuffled off by Mrs Weasley to go and get himself ready.
He took a shower and walked back to the tent. He tried to get his hair to be a little less messy, but it didn't seem to work very well. Typical he thought. After messing with it for almost 20 minutes, he gave up and started putting on his robes. He liked how the robes had been chosen for him by Fleur, and that she had been able to choose something nice. The green robes matched his eyes perfectly. He would look pretty good, although he hoped not as good as Bill. His duties had been explained to him, and there really wasn't much for him to do. He would greet the guests, and he would be seated on the side of the altar. Other than that, the only thing he would have to do is walk one of the bridesmaids down the aisle and then sit with her at the dinner. No big deal. I have definitely been through worse. The only thing that he wondered was which bridesmaid he was going to be paired with. He knew that Hermione was going to be a bridesmaid along with Ginny and Gabrielle. He had also overheard Fleur talking about her friend from France being one. He knew that Charlie was the best man and that Ron and himself were two of the other ushers, but he wasn't sure about the last person. He didn't recall hearing Bill talk about having anyone else, but there must be at least one other person to equal out the men and women. Harry wondered if they were going to pair him up with Ginny, because that would be a bit awkward. He knew that she wouldn't like the idea, and hopefully they all knew that. Would they stick him with Gabrielle? I'm sure that Gabrielle would love to be my date for the night. I guess it would be better than Ginny. He finished getting dressed as he contemplated this. 20 minutes later he was ready, and he looked at his watch. 3:00. He walked outside and looked around. He saw a giant tent set up, with a bunch of chairs underneath it facing up to a platform. In another hour that tent would be filled with friends and family of the Weasley's. He started to get nervous, knowing that he was going to be a semi-big part of the ceremony. He was thinking about what he had to do when he was nudged on the back by Mrs. Weasley.
"You look, marvelous dear. Come on Harry, we have to go over what you, Ronald, Charlie, and Steven will need to do for the wedding. We need to make sure that you all know what needs to be done. This is more for Charlie than anyone else. You other three should be alright with going along. You three mostly just have to greet the guests. They should be arriving soon." She started to walk away, with Harry in tow. He decided he should try and find out what he was thinking about before.
"Err... Mrs. Weasley. Could I just ask if you know who I am going to be escorting to this wedding?" he asked nervously.
"Oh, well I am not sure who Fleur paired you with. She took care of that part with her mother. They wouldn't let me have a say in it. Why, are you worried about who you will get paired with?" she asked, turning to look at him. She could see the tension in his face. "Don't worry dear. I'm sure she would have been able to rearrange things to accommodate new situations." She tried to phrase it as nicely as possible.
"Oh. Uhm I really hope so. I just wouldn't want tonight to be too... Uhm... awkward." Harry said. "Maybe we should hurry up. Looks like there's a large group of people coming up this way." Harry pointed at the large group of people walking up the path. There had to be at least 50 people if not more. It was only then that he saw the reason for the large group. Walking at the center was Rufus Scrimgeour. Harry could hardly watch as the Minister got closer. His stomach started churning, expecting a confrontation. He was surprised when the Minister walked right past him and greeted Molly.
"Mrs. Weasley. I would like to thank you and your husband for allowing me to attend this wedding. It is great to see that there is something good happening throughout this entire ordeal. I hope that you do not mind the added security detail I brought along? I want this night to stay problem-free." He smiled at her, and she was unsure of how to react.
"Well thank you Minister. We are only too glad to have you. I am only too thankful for the protection; I would really love to have this wedding go off without any problems. If your extra protection helps, then by all means we are only too glad to have you" she told them. Harry looked at her and could tell she wasn't honest about everything. He was sure that she wouldn't want the Minister there, but that she did want to have the wedding ruined.
"Excellent. Everyone, take your positions around the perimeter. You all know your orders. Move." Rufus barked to the Aurors following him. They all split up, making for their positions around the Burrow. Harry was surprised by the preparation, but remembered that the people he was watching were trained to do this sort of thing, and the person giving out the orders was head of the Aurors for years. He nearly jumped when the Minister turned to him. "Hello to you as well Mr. Potter. I'm sorry for not saying hello right away, but I needed to get the formalities out of the way. How are you doing young man?" Harry was skeptical of the treatment from the minister but didn't show it. He knew he had to act accordingly in the few hours they would spend at the wedding. He wouldn't be the reason that the Minister left and took his entourage with him.
"I'm fine, thank you Minister. I can understand that formalities must be taken care of before pleasantries. If you will excuse me, I need to go and discuss my duties for the wedding. I hope you will understand my formalities must be finished before pleasantries. Minister, Mrs Weasley, if you would excuse me." Harry gave him a slight bow and turned to the shocked Mrs Weasley and gave another small bow. He turned his back on them and strode to the giant tent.
Molly could hardly believe how well Harry had dealt with the Minister. She couldn't believe that this was the same boy that had yelled at her only a few nights before. She smiled as he bowed and walked away to the tent.
"I was wondering how he would take my arrival. He wasn't aware I was coming I take it?" the Minister asked.
"Oh, well he heard Arthur and me talking about it this morning, but other than that he didn't. He is remarkably calm compared to the other night. He has his ideas about everything, and he has become more outspoken recently." She was also surprised at how forward and open Scrimgeour was being. She knew there was more to his coming to the wedding than just being happy about a couple being wed. She would bet that the young man who had just walked off had to be the real reason the Minister was here. "I'm sorry Minister. Please, go inside and make yourself at home. I need to go and make sure everything is going to go smoothly with the rehearsal. The others are inside the house and other guests should be arriving shortly. If you would excuse me." With that, Molly walked off towards the tent and the Minister walked to the house.
As Harry neared the tent, he saw everyone standing around the altar. It seemed like the entire wedding party other than Bill and Fleur were gathered. He started getting nervous, wanting to be anywhere but under the tent. He noticed Ron and Charlie both wearing new sets of dress robes. Charlie was able to recover the day after he woke up in the room with his mother. The quick treatment by the healers and his mother's care had seen to that. He walked up to them. They were both wearing silver robes, which he thought was odd compared to his emerald green. He thought that most weddings had everyone matching. His odd look must have been picked up by Charlie because he turned to talk to Harry. "It's not a traditional muggle wedding Harry. Here, the ushers and their dates dress to match each other, not to match the bride and groom. They all wear the same style, just different colours. It makes it better for those people who can't match up with the bride and groom. That way the bride stands out the most, but the other important people can shine too. Does that help the confusion?" Charlie laughed.
"That does actually. I thought there was something wrong. Thanks for the explanation." Harry looked at the people assembled. His stomach dropped when his vision rested on Ginny. She was wearing an olive green dress. I thought Mrs Weasley said they would have looked after this problem. How could they put me with Ginny after what happened? He looked at her, and she took a glance at him before turning back to talk with Gabrielle. Harry was relieved to see that she was wearing a silver dress. At least I know that I'm not with Gabrielle. Harry looked at another tall brunette girl standing next to Ginny and Gabrielle. Who is she? he wondered. He saw that she was also wearing a silver dress. Wait; didn't someone say something about Fleur's best friend coming? Harry had to admit she was rather good looking, but then again Fleur probably kept up with the popular people. Being part veela, she could probably be in with any crowd she wanted. He noticed that the friend was stealing glances at him, almost looking upset for some reason. He looked at the last male of the group, and noticed a person that looked pretty close to that of Bill. It must be Bill's friend. Harry had to take a second glance when it registered. This person was wearing olive green robes. Harry's stomach leapt at the sight, realizing that this guy was probably going to be Ginny's date. Wait a minute, that means that there's only Mione left. There is no way they did that is there? Not wanting to believe it, he looked around but couldn't find Hermione anywhere. He contented himself with meeting Bill's friend. Harry walked over to the young man in the olive green robes. "Hello, I'm Harry. How are you doing?"
"Ah, the great Harry Potter. A pleasure to meet you. I'm Steven. I've heard a lot about you Mr Potter. Bill's told me about everything, not to mention all the press you get. I work with Bill by the way. What do you think of the wedding?" replied the wizard. Harry took in his appearance. He would have to assume that many of the curse breakers looked much like Bill. The man had longer hair, tied back in a ponytail, and Harry could see the hole in the ear that would be used for an earring. The man was a little bit shorter than Bill, but not as slim as Bill and he looked a bit more capable of handling himself.
"Well I have never really been to a wizard wedding before, well come to think of it I've never been to a wedding period. I can't really say how I think it's going" Harry replied honestly.
"At least you're honest. Most people would have said 'oh it's going great'" Steven replied, chuckling a bit. "Well from what I've seen, I think it is going to go pretty well. The weather seems to be holding up nicely. Now there is something that I was meaning to discuss with you. It has to do with my date for the wedding. I heard that you two split up, but I am hoping that this will not cause any problems between us?" Harry noted the nervous tones in the man's voice.
"What? Oh, you mean with me and Ginny? I can't see there being a problem with that. Everything is going fine with us, but yes we did break up. I don't hold any ill feelings towards you for having her as your date. I just hope you make sure that she has a fun time tonight, understand?" Harry gave Steven a look that showed he meant business.
"Of course Harry. I wouldn't dream of doing anything else. You have nothing to worry about." Steven smiled, and Harry could tell he was relieved. Harry nodded and returned the smile. He turned around to talk to Ron.
"What do you think Ron? How is the wedding going to go?" Harry asked. "And which of the ladies are you being paired with?"
"I think it will go alright as long as there are no interruptions. Then again, I doubt there will be. Have you seen the number of Aurors Scrimgeour brought with him? This is probably one of the safest places in Britain right now. As for the date, I'm not quite sure. It's obviously going to be either Fleur's friend or Gabrielle. They are the only ones in silver aren't they? I think we can all guess who your date is" Ron said, nodding towards the Burrow. Harry turned to look and almost didn't recognize the person walking towards him in an emerald green dress. It took him a second to realize the end result of the transformation he saw taking place over the day. She looks great! Harry thought as he watched Hermione walking towards him. He couldn't believe this was his best friend of 7 years, man had she ever changed. She was wearing the same low cut, knee-length dress that the other bridesmaids were wearing. Hers matched his emerald green robes perfectly. She had her hair straightened and in the bun that Mrs Weasley had helped her with a little while earlier. He couldn't believe the way the sun made her look more beautiful than she already was. It made her skin seem like it was glowing. She was walking in high heeled shoes, without any problems or stumbles. She can look good when she needs to, and she definitely knows how to carry herself. She was wearing small diamond stud earrings and a silver necklace. She smiled as she came up to them.
When Hermione was given her dress by Mrs Weasley, it was covered and she didn't take a look at it. She saw Harry's dress robes and saw that they were the usual emerald green. She had started getting ready that day and was it ever a mess. She had to shower and work with everyone to help Fleur. Throughout the day she was running around like a chicken with her head cut off. She had to make sure that everything was right and that she was going to look alright. How could I let Harry talk me into sleeping for a little while longer? This is too late. I wish I was a guy and could sit around doing nothing. She saw Harry talking with Mr Weasley most of the day in the kitchen, and could see him stealing glances at her. Is everything I'm doing actually grabbing someone's attention? She smiled to herself and kept working away. When she got around to opening her dress up, she almost fainted. There was no way they had done that; Ginny would be furious. She lifted the emerald green dress out of the plastic. They made me Harry's date? I can't believe this. Secretly, she was relieved to be with her friend for the night. She got over it and got dressed. Finally she was finished and came back down in her dress. She noticed that everyone had disappeared, except for one person sitting in the kitchen having tea. "Hello Minister. How are you today?" she asked. The old man turned to look at her.
"Very well thank you. Who may you be?" he inquired.
"Hermione Granger. I'm a friend of the family. I go to school with Ronald and Ginevra" she answered.
"Ah yes, I do remember seeing you at the funeral. So you are a friend of Mr Potter as well I take it?" She nodded and he smiled. "Ah yes, such a charming young man. He was quite polite when I greeted him today. He seems to have changed slightly, become more mature. I can see he has some very good influences in his life, such as yourself. I think you are the Ms Granger. Top witch in your year?" She nodded again, going slightly red in the cheeks. "Ah yes. I have heard of you. You show some great promise. I would hope to see you get a top job in any part of the Ministry. You should speak to my personal assistant when you are finished your final year. I'm sure after your OWL scores you could get any NEWT you try for. You should think about it. I can get you in anywhere." He smiled at her.
"Well thank you Minister. I think that there could be some major changes to be done to some parts of the Ministry. I will have to keep your offer in mind. Thank you again, but I must be going. I'm part of the wedding party and need to go and find out my duties." She gave a quick bow and hurried out the door. That was strange. She started walking towards the tent. Where are Harry and Ron? She spotted them talking under the tent and walked even more determinedly towards them. She couldn't help but smile when Ron nodded towards her and Harry turned around. He looked like a deer in headlights. He was stuck staring with his mouth hanging open. I guess I did catch someone's eye. 'I think you caught a little more than his eye. He can't stop staring at you.' Sooner or later that voice was going to drive her insane.
"Well, what do you think Harry? Ron?" she asked as she came up to them. Harry was finally snapped out of it, and Ron was just smiling. She twirled around to give them the full view. She didn't know why but she felt so comfortable showing off in front of them. There was no need to be nervous around her friends.
"Looks great Hermione. How is it that I wasn't able to get stuck with you for the night as my date?" Ron laughed.
"Because you refer to the night as being 'stuck' with me." She playfully slapped him on the arm. "So I guess it's me and you tonight Harry. Have you found out what we need to do yet?" she looked at him.
"Uhm Ron is right Mione. You definitely look great. I guess I got lucky tonight. I doubt I could have been paired up with a better partner for the night." Harry smiled at her, and she beamed back at him. "It looks like they want us to get ready, here comes the minister for the ceremony." He tried to avoid all nervous reactions, but couldn't help but sneak glances at Hermione. She has changed. Like really changed. WOW!
15 minutes later and 3 trips down the center aisle of the tent with Hermione on his arm, they were all aware of what they needed to do for the wedding. Harry felt a little better now that he was prepared for what was to come. He still couldn't get Ginny's glares at him and Hermione as they walked down the aisle out of his head. This wasn't going to have a good impact on her already inflated idea that Harry and Hermione were an item. He walked out of the tent and noticed that a large crowd had gathered near the path leading to town. He started to get nervous. He could see that Ginny and Steven were talking and smiling at each other. Looking at Charlie and Fleur's friend Jacqueline, he noticed that they seemed to have hit it off. Gabrielle and Ron didn't seem to be that interested in each other. It seemed like Gabrielle was stealing looks at Harry, and he could see it out of the corner of his eye. He refused to make eye contact with her.
Hermione looked at Harry and could see his nervousness. She reached around with her left hand without looking away from his face. She found his right hand and intertwined her fingers in his, and gave them a gentle squeeze. She watched him look at the hand then up at her face and give her a smile. She could tell that he relaxed slightly. The smile stayed on his face even when she let go of his hand. "Well Mr Potter, it looks like it's time to go down and meet the guests. What do you think?" She smiled at him as she finished. Before Harry could answer, Charlie piped up.
"Alright guys, time to make Bill look good - if that's possible. It is Bill after all. Jacqueline, would you accompany me to meet the guests?" he offered out his arm as he spoke, and she accepted it. They locked arms and started walking down to the path. Gabrielle took after them, leaving a disgruntled Ron in her wake trying to catch up. Ginny and Steven went next, linking arms, smiling, and chatting the entire way. Harry took a deep breath and smiled at Hermione. Offering out his arm, he spoke.
"Well Ms Granger. I think you are right. Would you do me the pleasure of attending this function as my date?" he smiled as she giggled. She put her arm in his and smiled at him.
"Of course I would Mr Potter, but I expect you to be buying all my drinks for the night. If I'm going to be your date you better make this a good night." They both laughed and started their trip down to the main entrance to the grounds. When they got to the crowd, they moved into a line on the side of the path, behind Charlie and the others. As the guests went by they got more than one wink and firm handshake. One older couple even went as far as to say to Harry that they were just waiting to see the next wedding. Hermione blushed a scarlet that would make Ron look pink. He was surprised at how many people he knew. He saw a few professors from school, including Flitwick and McGonagall, as well as Hagrid and Madame Maxine. Even Victor Krum was there. The most surprising was Neville and Luna. They had been invited on Ginny's request apparently. Hermione was sure that Luna wasn't there for Ginny, but rather another red head in the family.
As the last of the guests arrived and greeted the wedding party, Charlie pointed out that it was time to make their way up to the tent as well. It was nearly 4 and the wedding would be starting any minute. When they got back up to the tent, the guests had made it inside and were sitting in the seats that were set up for them. Harry watched as the walls of the tents fell, blocking the view in and out, just after he saw the minister stepping up to the podium. Harry saw Bill walk out from the house and stop to give each of them a hug. He quickly thanked them all for being there to celebrate this occasion with him. He took his position at the front of the line as he heard the music start. He strode purposefully, with the biggest smile Harry had ever seen, into the tent. Behind him went Mr and Mrs Weasley and the Mrs Delacour. Charlie took a look at Jacqueline and the pair stepped up to the doorway. They paused to give Mrs. Delacour some time to make their way to the front of the tent before they started walking up the aisle as practiced. Harry saw Ginny and Steven do the same. He felt a tug on his arm and he turned to see Fleur.
"Thank you 'Arry. I am so glad you made it today." She gave him a quick hug before Hermione gave him a rather forceful tug towards the tent entrance. He turned to Hermione and smiled, receiving one in return.
As they stepped into the entrance, he saw that Ron and Gabrielle had almost made it to the end, but everyone had seemed to turn to look at the last pair to enter. He gulped and smiled as he felt Hermione shake a little on his arm. He knew she wouldn't be used to the stares. He brought his right arm up to hers that was wrapped around his left and gave her a pat on the hand. He felt the shaking stop immediately. They started to walk to the front of the tent, and every eye was on them. Harry could only smile as he looked around at everyone. So this is what it's like to get married. It's not as bad as everyone says it is. They made it to the front, and Harry let Hermione go with a slight bow to each other. She smiled at him as she took her spot next to Gabrielle. Harry barely saw the glowering look Ginny gave them; he was too preoccupied watching Hermione. She was smiling at him, and he got lost in his thoughts. She really does look amazing today. I mean, the hair looks good, but she really didn't need to do that. Her hair looked fine the way it was. Her smile looks great. I don't know how I got lucky enough to be with the most beautiful girl at this wedding tonight. She had to shake her head at him to look towards the entrance again. He shook himself out of it and looked to see Mr Delacour standing at the front of the tent, seemingly waiting. Then he saw Fleur step out and start to walk towards him. As she made it to her father, she bowed to him, and he bowed back, taking her up to the altar and handing her off to Bill. Bill and Fleur both looked ecstatic. Harry hardly recognized Bill. This wasn't the same slightly mangled face, but rather that like he was before. The happiness seemed to make Bill's scars fade and let the true Bill shine through. The minister started the speeches and the ceremony went by quickly. As it neared the end, the minister took out his wand as Bill and Fleur joined hands. With a last statement, he waved his wand over the hands and tapped them. A fiery strand of rope wound its way around their hands and Harry was surprised to see they hadn't felt any pain. He watched as the flames got tighter and moved into their skin. The minister seemed to be pleased, and he stated the last words that everyone needed to hear.
"I now pronounce you husband and wife, you may kiss the bride." Bill and Fleur leaned in for a kiss and the fire that was in their hands burned brightly before fading away. They turned to the crowd and Bill spoke up.
"If everyone could please stand and move to the outside of the tent for a moment." Everyone did as they were told, standing just outside the tent as the sides rolled back up. The minister waved his wand a few times and the chairs disappeared. In their place stood circular tables, and at the front by the altar stood a long, rectangular table with chairs on one side. "Please, everyone, take your seats. I'm sure my brother Charles gave you your table numbers as you entered." At his name, Charlie gave Bill a punch in the arm. With that, everyone sat down. There was a large area at the center; Harry presumed it was a dance floor. Harry and Hermione were at the left end of the table, next to Ron and Gabrielle. Ginny and Steven were at the opposite end, next to Charlie and Jacqueline. In the center sat Bill and Fleur. Before dinner, photographers ushered the party outside for a nice sunset group photo. There were pictures of individual couples and pictures of each of the families. They were then allowed to move back inside for dinner. The meal went by pretty easily, and after that the speeches started. Bill got up first.
"I would first like to thank all of you for taking time out of your lives to celebrate this special occasion with Fleur and I. I can't explain how marvellous it is to see you all here and happy. I know I probably shouldn't be this sappy, but I can't help it. Everyone here makes this night so much better for me and my wife. We can't relate how great it feels to know that we have this many friends and family that care about us." He stood next to Charlie and put his hand on his shoulder. "I'm sure you married couples can all relate to how we feel right now. Without you, this would be a boring night. I just hope that I don't hear too many stories about myself, particularly from my younger brother." He patted Charlie on the shoulder and laughed. "But, if any of you have some interesting stories about Fleur I would be more than willing to listen." He looked towards Jacqueline as everyone laughed. She shrugged her shoulders and he went on. "Seriously, I would really like to thank you all again for coming. I hope that you all enjoy yourselves tonight. If there is anything you find unsatisfactory, complain to my mother. I'm still too afraid to do that. I'm sure that there is one person in this crowd that could give her a good yell for you though." He looked at Harry, who went red in the face, and only the few people who had been around for the incident laughed. "Sorry folks, that's an inside joke. Please, enjoy yourselves." Everyone clapped as he kissed Fleur as he sat back down.
Charlie got up next. "Well, I doubt if I can make as good a speech as Bill can. I've always been the one that hides with dragons to avoid awkward situations like this. Guess I can't use one to get away this time. Although I could give a story about Bill at a party one time." This caught Bill's attention.
"IT WAS ONE TIME CHARLIE" he laughed.
"Alright, so getting drunk and slipping in a pile of dragon dung is funny. Even if it was only one time. But then again, seeing your brother coming out of a tomb wrapped up like a mummy is something that I am never going to forget. Well, that and hearing Mum yell at Fred and George for doing it. I don't know where I would be without Bill. He's always been a great brother. He was there for me when I went to school, and he always had my back. Even though we weren't known as the pranksters of the school, we still had our moments. I'm sure you remember that incident that we had with McGonagall during my 4th year? She flipped her wig when she found out that we were the ones that floated all those toads up through the open window in Gryffindor tower into the girls dorm."Charlie laughed along with Bill.
"I remember that too you know" shouted Mrs Weasley from the table next to the head table. The boys burst out into even louder laughter at that.
"All jokes aside, I have always looked up to my brother. He was never the one to give in and would fight until the end. The respect I have for him goes deep and I couldn't be happier for him. Though I have to admit, I am slightly jealous right now. Hopefully my wedding will be someday soon, that is if I ever find a girl who likes dragons. Well, Fleur, I wish you the best with my brother. You are going to need to take care of him. He can get kind of dumb sometimes. I wish you both the best in the future, and if you ever need a babysitter just let me know. I know a nice Horntail that's very protective of youngsters." He laughed, and Fleur looked shocked. "To the newlyweds." He raised his glass in a toast. Everyone followed suit.
The rest of the party went smoothly. There were a few more speeches made about the couple, with many interesting stories of funny mishaps in their youth. Harry and Hermione both had fun listening to the stories and laughing along with the rest of the guests as Bill and Fleur tried to make people believe that those stories never happened. They didn't even realize that once the stories stopped, the people would get to mingle; and dance. Harry saw the lights dim as he was talking to Hermione about their last year at school. He saw Bill and Fleur get up, and the music started. He heard a slow song start up by who he thought were the Weird Sisters. He watched the newlyweds move to the center of the dance floor and take each others' hand. Bill put his other hand around Fleur's waist and she on his shoulder. Harry realized that he would have to be up there soon with Hermione. He could feel the blood drain from his face as he whitened. He still wasn't any better at dancing than he was back in the 4th year. He remembered how he had stepped on Parvati's feet at least a dozen times. He didn't want to do that to Hermione.
"Uhm Mione?" he whispered. "I'm not feeling so well right now. Do you mind if we go and take a walk or something? I think I need some fresh air." He knew he sounded nervous but he didn't care if it got him out of this situation. He stopped when he saw her eyes as she looked at him. He knew that this meant a lot to her.
Hermione had seen the bride and groom get up and thought she knew what was coming. She was right. It was the first dance for the new couple. She watched as Fleur and Bill walked out to the center of the dance floor. The lights had dimmed and the song "Who Needs A Love Potion When I Have You" came on. She saw the pair move together and start up a slow dance. She got tears in her eyes seeing the new couple dancing happily, without a care in the world. She hoped that she would get to be that happy one day. She heard Harry say something, but couldn't make out what it was. She turned to look at him and saw the strange look on his face.
As Harry looked at Hermione he could tell that it meant a lot, and he couldn't do it to her. He smiled and mustered up all the courage he could. "Well Mrs. Granger, if you are my date, do I have to ask?" She looked at him with a puzzled expression. "And they call you the brightest witch of your age why?" he asked, and received a death glare from her. He laughed. "Would you care to dance?" Her glare immediately turned into a huge smile. He stood up and stuck his arm out to her. "Just don't blame me if your feet hurt after this." They both laughed. She stood up and grabbed his arm in hers.
"I would love to Mr. Potter. Thank you." She smiled at him as he led the way to the dance floor. When he passed the table, he heard Charlie speak.
"Hang on. I thought we were the ones who were supposed to get up and join them first. Jacqueline, they are stealing out moment." He got up and she followed him out to the floor to join Harry and Hermione. Shortly after, Ginny and Steven followed, and Ron grabbed Gabrielle. He had to practically drag her up.
Harry and Hermione stopped at the edge of the dance floor and felt almost every eye on them. He bowed to her and she bowed back. Smiling, they took positions like Bill and Fleur, and Harry took the lead. Harry couldn't help but smile at the way Hermione looked. She was so lost in the moment, she was just smiling and laughing. She seemed to be having the time of her life. He had to admit, he was having a lot of fun too. Even the glares he got from Ginny and Gabrielle weren't bad enough to spoil his fun. Photographers were circling the dance floor, taking pictures of the couples. More than one stopped to take a few pictures of Harry and Hermione. Neither Harry nor Hermione wanted the song to end and when it did they both stopped moving. "I didn't step on your feet too much did I?" Harry asked. Hermione just looked at him and laughed.
"No Harry, I don't think you did it once. My feet are perfectly fine."
"Well how about I get us some drinks? Pumpkin juice sounds good to you?" Harry asked her.
"That sounds marvelous Mr. Potter. I think I may have to take you out more often. You do know how to treat a lady right. Do you mind if I go say hi to Viktor? It's been ages since he wrote last." She looked at him, not knowing what his response would be. If she was right about his feelings for her then he would show some sign of annoyance. Her heart dropped a little at his response.
"Go for it. I will catch up with you when I get our drinks." Harry smiled at her and walked off towards the bar area. Harry had to admit to feeling that beast inside his stomach again at the mention of Krum, but it wasn't the same as before. He knew that Hermione had said that Krum didn't feel like the right person to her, so he didn't have the same jealous feelings inside him. It did feel bad to have her leave him to go talk to another guy, but he knew she would be back later. He grabbed a couple of drinks and turned to look at Hermione talking to Krum. At least she's having a good time; that's all that matters to me. She looks so great tonight. Harry couldn't stop himself from staring at her. She evidently noticed, mostly because Krum nodded towards Harry and she turned to catch him staring. She blushed a little before turning back to Viktor. If she already saw him, he might as well go over there. He saw Ginny and Gabrielle talking in a corner and he didn't like the looks he was getting off them. As he continued through, Fleur stopped him.
" 'Arry, I would like you to meet my cousin Jeanette. She has been wanting to meet you." Fleur gestured to one of the girls Harry had seen earlier sprinkling glowing dust everywhere during the ceremony. Jeanette couldn't be more than 6 or 7 years old. She was half hiding behind Fleur's dress and peaking out at him.
"Well hello there, how are you?" Harry said, bending down towards the girl. "You look very pretty today. Between you and me, I think the only girl that is here prettier than you is your cousin here." That was a lie, Hermione is the only one prettier than Jeanette. "How would you like to have a dance in a little while?" he asked the little girl. She immediately smiled and nodded her head. "Alright, come and find me in like 2 minutes, I just have to drop this drink off to my date. How's that?" Harry smiled at her. She nodded and giggled.
Harry took off and found Hermione still talking with Krum. He noticed that as he got closer, they stopped talking. It was that feeling that he got when he heard his aunt on the phone with Hermione talking about him. He shrugged it off and handed her the drink. "Hello, Viktor. Long time no see. How are you doing?" Harry asked, giving Krum a firm handshake.
"Very vell thanks. Vhat about you Harry?" Viktor responded with his heavy accent.
"I'm keeping busy. This and that. You know what I mean?" Viktor nodded and Harry turned to Hermione. "Do you mind if I give Fleur's little cousin the next dance?" Hermione looked at him. "I promise to give you another dance." She gave him a questioning look. "Alright how about 2 more dances?"
She laughed at his attempt. "Alright, three more dances and you have yourself a deal."
"Good enough for me. You gave up too easily, you could have easily got four or five more" Harry winked at her as he took off back towards the dance floor. No sooner had he got there than Jeanette ran up to him. "Would you care to dance?" he smiled at her and bowed, reaching out his hands. She giggled and grabbed his hands. They danced like crazy for two songs, all the while being watched from various angles by a few different people.
Hermione watched Harry dancing with the little girl and saw how good he was with kids. He's going to make a great father when this is all over. 'I bet you want to get him to be your kids' daddy don't you?' the voice said. I do not. I would never think that way about Harry. Please. 'Liar. I can hear your thoughts. Hell, I am your thoughts' the voice responded. She shook her head to get rid of the voice and continued watching Harry.
"You care about him more now, do you not?" came Viktor's voice from behind her. She turned around to look at him. "I can see it in your expression Hermione." At least he can finally say my name properly. She smiled. "You really do care about him more than a friend. It's obvious. There is something that ve never had. I hope that vorks vell for you two. You look like you vill make a very good couple." Viktor smiled at her and she turned back to look at Harry. The only problem was that he wasn't dancing with a child anymore, but rather with a sexily dressed bridesmaid with blond hair.
As Harry danced with Jeanette, he took the opportunity to watch Hermione from a distance. He caught her staring at him more than once, and he watched Krum start talking again. As Krum did that, an arm turned him away from the little girl, and Jeanette seemed happy to run off after her dance with Harry.
"I 'ope you don't mind if I cut in do you?" Gabrielle asked as she got right up close to him and put her arms around his neck. Harry put his arms on her waist to start pushing her away and protesting about needing to get back to Hermione, but she had already started moving to the slow song. "I can't take it 'Arry, I 'ave to say it. I love you!" With that, she got even closer and crashed into him with a kiss. Harry tried his best to struggle away, but her arms were locked in place and not letting him go. Finally, she let go with a satisfied smile on her face. Harry heard the catcalls and immediately pushed her away from him.
"That was way over the line Gabrielle. There is no way you should have done that. I think you are an alright person, but you can never do that to me. Ever. I'm sorry but I have to get going. I need to find my date." With that, Harry stormed off towards where Krum was now standing alone.
Hermione had turned around and saw Harry dancing with Gabrielle. She didn't know why but she started feeling jealous. He's just dancing, and besides, it's not like the two of us are dating or anything. This fact seemed to calm her down a bit, but when Gabrielle kissed Harry, her heart dropped. She didn't know why but it felt like her heart broke in two. She felt tears coming to her eyes and decided to make a run for it. She didn't care who saw her crying, she just needed to go and get some fresh air. She heard Krum try and stop her, but she shrugged him off and kept going. How could he do that? He loves m....... Ginny. He said he couldn't be in a relationship because of how much danger the person would be put into. Now he's snogging Gabrielle? 'Now you are sounding like me. Just be logical. Would Harry really do that? Well unless he's trying to have Gabrielle killed to keep her away from him. Use that overly large brain of yours and think. Would he really do that to Ginny if he still loved her? Would he do that to you since he loves you? He wouldn't, you know that. You saw that Gabrielle instigated the kiss. It wasn't Harry's doing.' Hermione had to admit that her voice had a point. I can't believe I'm arguing with myself. Maybe it's right though. Harry really wasn't the instigator and he didn't look like he liked it. Maybe he was forced into it. She continued to walk, coming on the backside of the Burrow. She walked into the kitchen and wasn't surprised that it was empty. She made herself some tea and sat down, feeling the wetness of her eyes. She hoped that it would be dark enough that no one would notice when she finally went back outside. She sat, looking at the cup of tea, lost in her thoughts for a while until the door opened and the one person she didn't want to see her like this came walking in.
Harry had made his way back to Krum and stopped. "Viktor, where did she go?" he continued to look around, not catching a glimpse of her anywhere. Viktor didn't respond, and Harry turned to look at him. "Where is she?" Harry asked again. Viktor grunted. "What is that supposed to mean? Where is Hermione?" Harry started getting frustrated with the much larger international Quidditch player. He didn't even care about the angry look Krum was giving him.
"She's not here. She isn't very happy. I vould suggest you go back and find your dance partner." Krum growled at him.
"Back off Krum. I just want to find Hermione. If you aren't going to help then sod off." Harry was really getting mad now. He started to move away, and Krum got in front of him. Harry looked into his eyes, getting really pissed. "Move it before I do something I'm going to regret."
"Listen Harry. You need to give her some time. She just needs to calm down. You kissing that blonde voman made her very angry." Harry could see Viktor's hand edging towards his wand.
"Trust me. You don't want to move that hand any further down. I may not be allowed to do magic, but if you pull it then I can push self-defense. Coming from Durmstrang, it wouldn't be hard for me to say that it was a life-threatening situation. And besides, I wouldn't want to ruin the wedding." Harry saw Krum's hand stop inching. He had drawn a couple of pairs of eyes around them.
"You are lucky Potter. If ve veren't here right now, you vould be in for trouble. Hermione may have said there vas nothing betveen us, but I still see her as my friend. I do not like it vhen my friends are hurt. I expect that you vill go and make good for vhat you did." Krum gave him an expression that seemed to be one telling Harry he meant business. "I know that you care about her, so go and apologize. You may be surprised to find that she cares for you too. If you vant to go and apologize, she vent that vay." He nodded his head towards the Burrow and Harry nodded.
"Thanks," Harry said as he pushed past Krum. He was still fuming, and his mind wanted him to hit Krum with a nice stunning spell. He just kept walking. He made his way up to the Burrow. Krum watched him go. I guess the feelings Hermione has are mutual. Vhen vill they realize it though? I vonder vhat she is up to? Krum watched as the youngest Weasley sneakily followed Harry.
As Harry approached the house, he looked around and didn't see anyone. Where would she be? Why would she be upset seeing Gabrielle kiss me? There's no way that she cares that way is there? Ugh. My head is starting to hurt. Maybe some cold water would help, and then maybe I could think more clearly about where she could be. He walked to the kitchen door and saw a light on inside. He looked in the window and smiled. There she is. He noticed that her makeup had started to run. She was crying, and he felt like a knife was jabbed in his heart. Was that because of what she saw? It's amazing how beautiful she still looks though. He didn't even chastise himself for what he called her this time. He was beyond caring about that, he only cared about making her feel better. He put his hand on the doorknob and turned, opening the door.
"How come you are in here Mione?" he asked as innocently as possible.
"I just... Uhm... needed some tea. I wasn't feeling well" she replied, trying to cover up her sniffle with a cough.
"Are you alright Mione? You really don't look like you are very happy. What's wrong? I turned around to find you and you were gone." He watched her reaction.
"Well, I figured that you would be busy with Gabrielle for a while. You both looked pretty occupied." She didn't mean for it to come out that harsh, but internally, her heart was hurting. She knew he hadn't meant it, but it still hurt. It shouldn't hurt though. We aren't together. 'But you still love him. That is enough.'
Harry took a step back at her cold tone. So the kiss really is bugging her? Is Krum right about there being feelings for me? "Hermione. The kiss wasn't planned. I didn't even have a say in it. She just jumped on me. If I could have gotten away I would have. I tried to tell her that I owed you a dance right before she grabbed me, but she wouldn't let me say anything. I can't think of Gabrielle like that. She isn't the one. I know that without a doubt in my mind. That whole thing you said about perfection. I didn't have to kiss her to know that. I need someone more down to earth, someone with a less inflated ego. She is the sister of Fleur, so that is enough to get her ego inflated beyond normal size. Besides, she isn't smart enough. She has too much of that Delacour attitude to know anything important."
Hermione had turned to watch him with a vague expression. He's looking for someone smarter? It wasn't the perfect kiss? What is he getting at? "I'm sorry Harry. I know I overreacted, but you were supposed to be my date. I just felt hurt that you were dancing with her and then kissing her. I just thought that you could have at least waited until after the wedding." She laughed a bit, showing that she was joking. "I'm just a silly girl, I'm really sorry Harry."
"It's ok Mione. You don't have to be sorry for anything, well besides calling yourself silly." He smiled at her. "Look, let's go have one of those dances I promised you." She gave him a stare with a bit of a smile.
"Well now that you have caused me this much distress, I think we need to renegotiate the number of dances you owe me, Mr. Potter." She smiled at him fully, a devilish glare coming to her eyes.
"Alright, I will give in to that. How about you get another four dances? I think that is fair." He smiled back at her.
"Not good enough for me. I get the rest of the dances until the end of the party unless I say you can go and dance with someone else." Harry gave a mock alarmed expression. She giggled.
"Alright. You drive a hard bargain. How about this, I will dance with you for the rest of the night, but if a prettier girl than you comes along I am leaving without the need of permission from you." He looked at her as her smile started to drop. "Don't worry Mione; I haven't seen anyone out there that fits that criterion." She immediately blushed and her smile deepened.
"Deal. But you are going to have to give me a few minutes to try and fix my makeup." She rubbed off some of the makeup that had run down her face. He reached his hand up to her and wiped off anything that she had missed. At his touch, she felt a tingle run through the spot where his fingers met her cheeks. He took out his wand and pointed it at her face smiling.
"Makeup reparo." He muttered, and she gave him a confused look. He gave a bit of a disappointed look before grinning. "Well, would you look at that? I guess it doesn't need to be fixed. You look fantastic just the way you are." Hermione blushed even harder as she stared into Harry's eyes. He started inching closer to her. She started to get closer to him. Their faces were only inches apart. Her hand started to shake as they moved closer, still staring into each others' eyes. Her heart started beating faster, could this really be it? Hermione's mind was racing and her eyes closing. Just as they were about to touch, a voice rang out from the doorway, immediately moving them apart.
"HOW DARE YOU!" Ginny bellowed from the doorway. She had seen everything, heard everything, and saw what was coming. She freaked. "YOU ARE A HORRIBLE PERSON POTTER! FIRST GABRIELLE AND NOW GRANGER! I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME, I THOUGHT YOU CARED!" She started to pump out the fake tears that worked so well for her against her mother.
"Ginny. What are you talking about? You were the one that tried to force Gabrielle on me!" Harry didn't know how he knew, he just knew. "Now you think that just because Hermione and I were in here alone that we would be snogging? I did love you Gin, more than anything. But now, now that you are acting like this, I can't see you the same way that I did before. You've changed. I thought you would understand my reasons for the breakup, but I guess not. I don't know how you could do that. It's over Gin, deal with it. We could have got back together, but you had this stupid notion that I was cheating on you with Hermione. I never would have cheated on you. Now I won't ever have to worry about that. It's not going to go back to the way it was. I hope you don't mind staying as friends if I ever decide to forgive you. Come on Mione, I still owe you a couple of dances. Who knows, now that I don't have to worry about Ginny, maybe we can snog later tonight too." He gave Ginny a glare as he grabbed Hermione's hand and pulled her out the door. He felt good about getting that off his chest, and he kind of felt awkward at telling Ginny he may be snogging Hermione by the end of the night. Deep down, he almost liked the idea though. He had told Hermione earlier that he needed someone smarter, and it was true. He liked her and she was the smartest person he knew. It surprised him that Ginny didn't reply to his statements. She must have been hurt not to try and make a comeback. He didn't care about that right now though, he just cared about cheering Hermione up.
Hermione had nearly died when she heard the voice. Oh no! Not Ginny! 'Finally. Now she can finally see what's there and get off Harry's back. Then you can have him all to yourself.' That is not the way this should happen. Wait. I mean it shouldn't happen. They belong together. 'Keep telling yourself that. Maybe you should pay more attention to what's going on around you.' Hermione snapped out of her mental conversation and looked up at Ginny. She could see the tears coming down her face, but for some reason, she looked almost shocked. Hermione finally tuned in to what Harry was saying.
"...I can't see you the same way that I did before. Who knows, now that I don't have to worry about Ginny, maybe we can snog later tonight too." Her heart leaped into her throat at his last sentence. He grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the door. Did he really just say that? 'Yes. Was he stuttering or something?' She could hardly think as she was pulled past a stunned Ginny. Hermione could already see the tears forming in Ginny's eyes, real tears. She couldn't even say anything as she was half-dragged back to the tent. She could hear Harry breathing heavily, and could feel his magic start to pulse slightly ever since he had his rant with Ginny. As he turned to look at her, she felt the power fade and saw the smile creep back onto his face.
Harry was frustrated beyond belief. How could she be that idiotic? Why would she do something as stupid as getting Gabrielle to try kissing me? Wait, how did I know that she did that? This is just starting to get confusing. He walked past a bewildered-looking Ron who was talking to Luna as they got to the tent. Harry turned to look at Hermione and all his troubles left him. He instantly felt calmer and smiled at her. "Well now that our night troubles are over, how about another dance?"
"Alright then Mr. Potter, lead the way." She smiled back at him and he led her out onto the dance floor. They took up a position as they had before, coming into another slow song, and began dancing again. They danced the rest of the night away, smiling and laughing the entire time. Photographers were still around to take even more photos of them throughout the night. Harry forgot all about his problems just by looking into her eyes. After the second dance, they gave up the fancy dances and Harry put both arms around her waist, and Hermione put both her hands around his neck. They danced for a long time in this position, being very close. By the end of the night, after most of the guests had gone home, Hermione and Harry were still dancing in the same spot they had started in, only she now had her hands under his in a hug like a state, and her head resting on his shoulder. Finally, the band stopped playing and they looked around.
"I think everyone left us, Mione. Even the bride and groom are nowhere to be seen. Think we've been dancing too long?" he laughed.
"No, I like it here, everything seems perfect here. There's nothing to worry about and nothing to scare me. I wish we could stay like this forever."
He looked down at the top of her head. He couldn't help but wonder about what had happened, or rather what almost happened.
He didn't know why, but he had said she looked fantastic. Then he got lost in her eyes and before he knew it, they were only inches apart. He saw her eyes start to close and did the same. His palms started to sweat and he couldn't help but feel a nervous feeling building up in the pit of his stomach. He knew that contact would be made any second, but it never came. A voice startled him back to his senses and he backed off quickly. He knew the voice, and it only angered him more than she had been the one to interrupt them.
Harry and Hermione continued to dance, even without the music. Neither one wanted the night to end. Hermione finally looked up at Harry and saw him staring down at her. "Harry?" Saying his name brought him out of his trance.
"Yes Mione?" he asked.
"I just wanted to say thanks for giving me such a wonderful evening. I really appreciate it, and I'm sorry if you follow me into the kitchen caused more problems." She was on the verge of tears. If I ruined his night, I will never be able to forgive myself. She watched as his smile faded.
"Mione, it isn't your fault if anything happened. If she had this planned out as well as she did, if it wasn't you, it would have been someone else. I'm glad that you were there for me. I can't say how much you being around for the past few weeks has made my life better. I never really got to thank you for saving me. I don't know where I would be right now if you hadn't come to my rescue. If I gave you a good night, that would be the least I could do. Thank you, Mione." He smiled at her with his last sentence. His sentiments had caught her off guard, and she couldn't hold back the tears. She tucked her head into his chest.
"This has to have been the best night I've had in a long time, Harry. I love......." she caught herself mid-sentence. "d everything about the night. Thank you so much. I can't imagine what it would have been like to go to the wedding without you next to me." She stared up and met his gaze again, smiling.
"I know the feeling. I can't imagine a wedding without you as my date. I think we should probably head inside though. It must be time for bed soon." He reluctantly dropped his arms from her waist, and she let him go. He noticed her shiver as she let go. "Are you cold Mione?" he asked.
"Ya, I just got this chill. I felt fine when I was in, I mean when we were dancing." She rubbed her hands up her arms and over her shoulders, trying to warm them back up. Before she had a chance to say anything, she saw Harry take off his jacket and drape it over her shoulders. She just stood there, frozen by his chivalry. He didn't miss a beat when I said I was cold. That is so sweet. Then again, it is Harry. He put his arm over her shoulder and started to guide her back to the sleeping tent. She rested her head on his shoulder as they went, and her sleepiness caught up with her.
As they neared the tent, Harry saw another couple walking down towards the entrance to the grounds. He saw the lanky redhead, immediately recognizing Ron, and saw that he was walking with Luna. Harry couldn't help but smile. He continued up the path. Near the tent, he saw a solitary figure in the light coming from the house. He recognized the outline of a lion-looking figure. Harry wasn't sure he could deal with this right now. As the pair approached the tent, the Minister walked forward.
"Hello, Harry. I was wondering if we may have a word now. I know that we didn't talk before, but I did not want to ruin the wedding with unpleasant talks. Do you mind?"
"Yes Minister, what would you like to discuss? I'm sure it must be very serious for you to be staying this late." Harry looked at him, noticing that the Minister seemed to be uneasy and nervous.
"Well, Harry. There are actually a few matters that need to be looked after. The first is the reading of Albus Dumbledore's Will." Harry felt Hermione raise her head off his shoulder. A lump developed in his stomach. "You see, there are a few items that need to be discussed since you are included in it. There should be a formal reading at Gringotts after you turn 17. They will be contacting you on your birthday to make official arrangements. Ms. Granger and Mr. Ronald Weasley will need to be present, as well as his parents and a few others. They are all mentioned in the will. As for the other matter. I was discussing career opportunities with the young lady next to you earlier this afternoon. I would like you to reconsider the offer I made back in June." Harry's expression turned to a blank slate as he said the last words. "But I have also made an amendment to my offer. I would like you to undergo some Auror training, to help you in the coming months, or years, or however long it takes. After your training is complete, there would be no reason you couldn't be an actual Auror if you wanted to." Scrimgeour looked at Harry, a fake smile plastered on his face.
"Minister, it does not do you any good to lie to me. I know that you want me as one of your Aurors as much as you want Voldemort to run for Minister for Magic. The only reason you want me to do that is for the same purpose as last year. Since I'm assuming you haven't changed your tactics, I would have to assume that my stance has not changed either. I'm sorry to say that I am still Dumbledore's man, and that will never change." The Minister seemed to deflate on the spot. His expression turned as neutral as Harry's was.
"I see, well I can admire you for sticking to your principles, but there is a realistic idea that must be upheld. It's something that you don't understand yet, but you will. It's too bad we couldn't help each other Mr. Potter, allies will be hard to find soon. I wish you good luck, the fate of the world rests with you." The Minister seemed to be taking his rejection alright.
"Thank you, Minister. Now if that is all you need to discuss, I will be taking my leave along with my friend. I will see you at the reading. Good evening Minister." Harry bowed, taking Hermione with him. He turned towards the entrance to the tent and lifted it out of the way for Hermione. As she stepped in, he turned back to the Minister. "Minister, one more thing. I would hope that you are not trying to deceive my friends with hopes that you will never allow. I know that politicians use whatever advantage they can find, and I can understand that in the world of business. I just want to warn you, if you try and use my friends to get to me in any way, you will regret it."
"Is that a threat Mr. Potter? I could have you thrown in Azkaban for one you know" the Minister replied harshly, narrowing his eyes as he spoke.
"Like I said Minister, it is just a warning. It is not a threat, it's a promise. Goodnight."
With that, Harry moved inside the tent with Hermione. He saw her sitting on her bed, waiting. "Did you want me to let you get undressed Mione, I can come back in a few minutes."
"Harry, do you really think he was saying those things to me to try and gain your favor or something?" she asked, staring at him with a hurt look.
"Mione, if you weren't my friend then I would assume his offers were genuine. I think they still are, but they would have a second motive for doing it. He knows that you are the brightest witch of the age, and he wants to use you for himself. Whether that means using you to get me on his side as well or whether that just means using you to try and gain favor with the public, I don't know. Either way, you are still the smartest person I know. I can't blame him for wanting to have you on his side." Harry started to feel exhausted. She smiled at him.
"Thanks, Harry. You know just the right things to make me feel better. Before we get changed, do you mind if we get one more picture together? I just want one more picture of us, just to help remember the fun time we had." He smiled and nodded. She grabbed her camera and put it on Harry's cot, using the comforter to prop it up a bit. She went and sat back on her bed, motioning for him to sit next to her. She grabbed the remote for the camera and hit the 10-second button. "We have 10 seconds, so smile." He put his arm around her shoulder and she leaned into him. The timer went off and took the picture. "Just one or two more to make sure we get a couple good ones." She hit the button for a shorter timer, and the camera went off 3 seconds later. This happened a few times before Harry started laughing about how she wasn't going to stop. He decided that tickling her would be a great way to stop it, so he started around her ribs. She jumped as she rolled, trying to get away from the tickling. The camera flashed a few more times before they were both rolling on the bed laughing.
Finally, Harry stopped and found he was laying on top of her, and their faces were extremely close. He looked into her eyes and started feeling the same way he did in the kitchen a few hours ago. She stopped laughing and stared back. He started to move his head closer, and the feelings returned to both of them. His hands got sweaty, and hers started to shake. She bit her bottom lip, unsure of what was going to happen. He was getting closer, she could feel his breath on her face. She closed her eyes, waiting for it to come, but again, it never did. At the last second, Harry realized what was happening and pulled away, climbing off of her. "Uhm, uh, well, uh, maybe we should get out of these clothes. I mean maybe we should change our clothes. You know, get into our pajamas?" Harry stumbled through. "I should leave so you can get into your nightclothes."
"Maybe you could just turn around and I can turn around and we can both get changed. That way neither of us has to leave" Hermione suggested.
"Works for me, but you have to promise not to peek." He laughed nervously, causing her to throw a pillow. "Alright, I trust you. Now turn around." Harry watched her turn and turned around himself. He started to get undressed and changed into his pajamas. "Are you finished Mione?" he asked a few minutes later.
"Harry, can you please help me undo this dress. It isn't working very well. I just need you to undo the back." Hermione called to him. He turned around and looked at her. She was fumbling with the knot at the center of her back, unable to get it. He walked over and she put her arms down. He messed with it for a minute before it finally came undone. He helped loosen the dress and was surprised when it started to fall off of her. She grabbed it before it fell too far, and he didn't see anything besides a large portion of her back. He still blushed. He quickly turned around and walked back to the other side of the tent. "Alright. You can turn around now, I'm done." She called a minute later.
She had already gotten into bed as Harry turned to look at her. He thought it may have been awkward to get in with her after the incident a few minutes ago, so he sat on his bed. "Aren't you coming over here Harry?" she asked.
"Of course I am." He smiled at her, still feeling extremely nervous. He walked over and climbed in behind her. She snuggled close to him and he wrapped his arm around her. Both teens bid each other goodnight and pretended to sleep. Neither one was able to fall asleep quickly, both were thinking of recent events. Eventually, exhaustion overcame the pair. They drifted off into sleep around 4 am, and both dreamt of the wonderful night they had together. They each had the same dream, the dream that they were still dancing in each other's arms.
