Waiting for Nartuto outside the gates of the academy, Kana took her time to enjoy the early morning crisp air in the scant few rays of sun that had already appeared beyond the horizon. The academy was closed down today, for the purpose of using the building in the chunin exams. Naruto wasn't actually late, it was just her and Sasuke that were early. He was no doubt as excited as she was, even if he did a marginally better job of hiding it. The corners of his mouth were still upturned, which was as close to jumping around in excitement that Sasuke could get.
Still.. the chunin exams. After this they would no longer be a fixed team. While Kana will admit that she was not particularly close to any of her teammates, preferring to keep as much distance as would be considered polite, the thought still stung. In this line of work where danger ran high, bonds were fickle things that could be casually cut with a twist of a kunai, and it bothered Kana how easily she had started to think of team seven as 'hers'. A good working relationship was one thing, but deeper attachments were dangerous. And still, she couldn't help but want a team, something to call hers. And after passing the exams, she would no longer have that. Unless.. an idea started to take shape..
"Hey! You two are already here," Naruto appeared around the corner, waving with a big grin on his face.
"Good morning Uzumaki." If her voice was a tad more tired, nobody commented on it. He joined their little clique, away from any other genin waiting for their team, and together they entered the building, climbing up the stairs to the third floor. Inside it was packed with genin, all hopeful to become chunin. Kana could feel nervousness starting to form, a feeling of uneasiness from seeing all these people. At the end of the corridor was the door to room 301, but two teenagers were guarding it, refusing to let anyone through. Their loud voices carried through the hallway.
"We are just thinning out those who will fail anyway. What's wrong with that?" Team seven collectively squeezed through the crowd to the front, and that feeling of uneasiness grew stronger, until Kana was no longer able to write it off as uneasiness. Sasuke stepped forward, drawing the attention of the teenagers, and Naruto and her stayed a step behind flanking him.
"I agree.. but.. you will let me pass through. And also remove this surrounding created with genjutsu." Disbelieving murmurs spread through the corridor. Damn it, genjutsu. That explained the not-quite-right feeling. Kana pouted. She did not like genjutsu, and it steamed from how incompetent she was in that field. Still, she could bluff.
"Yes, we noticed it a while ago," she said, twisting her face into one of feigned superiority and confidence. Let the others think team seven were more capable than they actually were, and maybe they wouldn't be written off as easy pickings just because of their rookie status.
"Yup!" Naruto chimed in, following their lead. Kana was almost proud of his ability to read the situation and come to the same conclusion as her, and act accordingly. The room shifted, the sign turning from 301 to 201. Ah, so they were on the second floor.
"Hmm.. not bad. But all you did was see through it!" One of the teengers shouted and aimed a kick at Sasuke. Sasuke reacted quickly and brought his leg up in a kick of his own, and they met halfway. The teenager aimed an elbow towards Sasuke's stomach, but Sasuke parried again and then aimed a kick of his own. The teenager jumped back, pulling out a kunai with a grin. Sasuke stiffened minutely and pulled out a kunai too, getting into a battle
stance. That was when the second teenager laid a hand on the shoulder of the first, stopping him."That is enough. I think we should let them through," He said, and the first boy looked stumped, but tucked his kunai back into his pouch and nodded. With that, they proceeded to the actual third floor, all eyes on their backs. Or rather, Sasuke's back.
