I woke up to the sunlight flooding my room, turning over and putting the covers over my head blocking out as much light as I could. After getting comfortable my alarm went off, I sat up and turned it off wiping the sleep out of my eyes. I went through my notifications before getting out of bed and putting a hoodie on, I headed downstairs to the kitchen finding Ash making their self breakfast.

"What are you doing up so early?" I asked them. "You have school today do you not?' They replied taking a bite of their bagel. "Yes, but you don't." "Did you really think dad would let you walk to school on your own?" they said jingling their car keys. "I'm sixteen years old, maybe I bounced the thought around in my head a bit," I said "would you make me a bagel while i get ready?" "I guess so, we leave in a half an hour so be quick." they said as I walked upstairs. I decided to wear a black pleated skirt over a baggy tee, fishnets underneath as always and socks that wouldn't show under my boots. I set my backpack on my desk gathering the necessities, my pencil case, my binder, and my sketchbook. Anything else I needed was already in my bag. I brushed my hair and went downstairs.

"Your food's been waiting" Ash said handing me my plate. "Thank you." I said. After finishing Ash and I headed out.

"Text me if you need me to pick you up." Ash said as I got out of the car. "I will." I replied. I checked my notes for my locker number and classes, and texted Dahlia to let her know I just got to school. I made my way to my locker avoiding eye contact with the ninth graders. After putting my lock on my locker I checked my phone to see if Dahlia texted me back. I have chem first wby? She texted. English :( I wrote back, I plugged in my headphones as the bell rang. I decided to sit in the very back of the classroom near the wall without windows. All the desks were divided into groups of two, I really hope someone I know is in this class. After the two minuet bell students started flooding in, filling all the desks, familiar faces all around but nobody close enough to comfortably sit next to. By the time the final bell had rung there was still an empty seat beside me, perfect. I opened my sketchbook as the teacher began to talk, she introduced herself as Mrs. Whittaker. After she went over the curriculum and her plan for the semester the phone rang.

"Everyone come up and take one of these journals while I answer this" she said setting a stack of books on the front of her desk, then going to answer the phone, the dreadful ringing finally stopping. I got up to get a book walking slowly to the front hearing bits and pieces of the conversation going on. "Yes there's room, we have an empty desk" Mrs. Whittaker said, after a muffled response from who I'd assume is someone in the main office she smiled "We'd love to have him, send him down" I walked back to my seat as she hung up and resumed her place at the front of the class. I opened my book and flipped through the blank pages, this classroom smelled like new books and chalk.

"In just a moment we will have a new student join us, and then we will all do an introduction exercise as I take attendance" Mrs. Whittaker said cheerfully, she seems sweet and calm. She sat down and after a few minuets she looked over at the open door signaling for this new student to come in. He was tall, and skinny, his curly black hair had bits and pieces of blond scattered throughout it, he walked over to the teacher, who introduced herself to him and briefly recapped what she had already went over, everyone's eyes on him. Mrs. Whittaker pointed to the seat next to mine and gave him a wide smile as he left to come sit next to me, I quickly diverted my attention towards my hands avoiding being noticed although he was sitting next to me.

"Okay now that everybody is here I'd like you all to write a paragraph about something you did this summer, an interesting fact about yourself, or something you enjoy to write about, we're reading these aloud after attendance so be sure to make it appropriate for school please, I would not like to start the semester off with having to kick someone out." Mrs. W explained. The class filled with the sounds of flipping paper and pencils scribbling away.

The boy sitting beside me looked over at my page "What are you gonna write about?" He asked quietly, I looked up at him "Something I did over the summer." I replied looking back down.

"Katrina Murphy?" The teacher called for attendance. "Here." I said raising my hand a little,  after she nodded at me I went back to writing. "That's a pretty name." The boy said. "Thanks?" I replied waiting for his name to be called. After I finished writing I put my pencil down and took out my phone to pass time.

"Ivan Shaffer?" "Here." The boy replied, I looked at him, "That's a pretty name." I said quietly. "Thank you." He replied smiling at me.
