I don't work for Q Magazine or anything like that, I'm just working for the music section of a local newspaper in London. Somehow, don't even ask me, we managed to secure an interview with the band Coldplay. This is the reason I find myself midway through another one of my Editor's lectures.
"You've got to ask them suitable questions, things the readers want to know, things they haven't heard before. The questions have got to be open, no "yes or no" answers, okay?"
"Of course."
"And do not ask Chris about his family, you know that's a sensitive area right now." I nod. He just got divorced, poor guy.
"I know, I won't, it's going to be fine I promise."
"Right, well you're going to their recording studio to interview them and crap!!! It's already 12:45pm! Come on, you need to leave now, you can't be late."
We hurry downstairs and out of the building, the cool winter air hits me and I shudder. It is December after all. Makes sense why I'm going to be interviewing them about their new Christmas song then. We make it out to the car park and I open the door.
"Remember what I told you and have fun!" I finish getting in and drive off it only takes me a few minutes but I have to have a long discussion with security at the gates of their studio, The Bakery. I sigh, suddenly I've become really nervous, what if I do say something wrong? How will they react? Best to look on the bright side, I reason.
Forty five minutes later and I'm sat across the table from the biggest band in the world. Wow. No biggie...
"So, er, what persuaded you to write a Christmas song? I ask.
"Well, I don't really think it was intended to be a Christmas song or anything. We just had kind of an idea of what we wanted for a new song, and it kind of turned into a Christmas song." Chris replies, wow, has he got the best voice I've ever heard.
"So it's a normal song rather than just a song written all about Christmas?"
"Yes, very much so." I kick myself, that question was too closed.
"So Jonny...no major guitar riffs for you then?"
"No, I don't think it suits a Christmas song, just lovely piano melodies from Chris." they grin at each other.
Forty five minutes later and it's finished, I didn't feel like I was interviewing them, more like I was a part of their band, we were all laughing together by the end of it.
"So, er, listen we're all going to go and grab something to eat later, kind of our Christmas party, if you will?" It's Chris speaking, he laughs nervously. "I mean, you could come along if you wanted to, nothing too exciting, just at the local pub, restaurant thing, y'know?" He's so cute when he's nervous.
"Sounds amazing, so when are we talking about?"
"Well, about seven? And I er, I could pick you up if you want?"
I tell him my adress and he gives me his number, I say goodbye to all of the band and leave for home, I need to decide what the hell I'm going to wear!
