Saturday HaiKu!! Traditional Haiku (5-7-5) The most common and traditional Haiku structure is 5-7-5. This refers to the number of morae (sound units, often counted as syllables in English) in each of the three lines: Line 1: 5 syllables/morae Line 2: 7 syllables/morae Line 3: 5 syllables/morae Modern Variation (5-5-5) The 5-5-5 structure is a modern variation that is sometimes used. While it is not a traditional form, it's popular because it maintains the three-line structure and consistent rhythm. Line 1: 5 syllables/morae Line 2: 5 syllables/morae Line 3: 5 syllables/morae The key difference is that the middle line is shortened from seven to five sound units, which gives the poem a more uniform and concise feel.
