A pebble rolled down Flora's path through the park on her way home from the library. Passing under the naked branches of trees, the trail dimly lit by the warm fluorescent of equally spaced street lamps, the fear of the unknown hidden in the shadows all around her was the least of Flora's troubles.
Forgetful of time studying for an exam, Flora's attention was split between remembering what the particular protein displayed on the screen of her mobile was and hurrying back to her room for some semblance of sleep before morning. As midnight approached that grew littler and littler with each passing second.
In her final year of university, Flora had her entire adult life ahead of her but it all depended on passing those examinations. With a graduate offer in her grasps, Flora wasn't going to let anything stand in her way-not the voices in her head, not the many teachers and tutors who told her she should not reach too high, and not the rogue meteorite broken from the starry rain hurdling right for her.
Flora took cover behind a tree and closed her eyes after the meteorite crashing into an open area in the park sent debris of dust and twigs in all directions. Heard for miles, the crash sent the city into a panic as it woke back up, startled by the sound of the sky falling.
Behind a tree and crouched in a foetal position, Flora slowly opened her eyes as her ears finally stopped ringing. Covered in splinters and ash, Flora nearly stumbled to her knees after a sudden wave of exhaustion flooded her body.
Flora would come to find, orbiting a mass of energy intrigued by the technology in its grasp, the phone buzzed with excitement after each pulse of electricity brought it to life. Flora backed away, she stepped on a twig and alerted it to her presence.
Too quick for reaction, the night became a blur.
She woke up in the morning, in bed, without a clue that her life had been changed...
...for the better, or the worst?
