Lucy had noticed that something was wrong with Kojo. He's always been lazy, but a part of her knew as he started to walk slower and sleep longer that her time with him was coming to an end. Though she hasn't spoken to him in years, Lucy called Tim knowing he would want to say goodbye to the dog they once shared. Even if their reunion would be awkward and tense, they could try to put their history aside to sit with their favorite dog in his final moments.
