Sage Cross is not just any girl who lives in the city of Catalia. She is one of few who can control one of the four basic elements: air, earth, fire, and water. When a person turns 17 in Catalia, they are to chose one of four factors: Durable, Equity, Valorous, and Unanimity. Each factor basically represents one of the four basic elements. Sage is from the Equity Factor, but she knows that she belongs in the Valorous Factor. Sage wants nothing more than to fit in, but she has had a difficult social life, not to mention a secret that could get her killed. When she starts to actually fit in with her new factor and get some friends, she is singled out. She soon figures out that being able to control an element is not as fun as she thought it was when she was younger. Will she pass her initiation? Will she be able to keep her secret?
