Nathan is a peasant in the Medieval times. He was a serf. That meant he was almost enslaved. Not quite that bad, but close. Aspen was a noble woman. They wanted to marry each other but the noble man in Nathan's fief wouldn't let them. He had the rights to do that and that's what he did.
