ANNABETH CHASE is perfect. Well, not perfect, but she gets pretty damn close with each article she writes for Riordan High's student-run newspaper, the Half-Blood. She's vying for an editor spot for junior year, and has high hopes of becoming the editor-in-chief, and hopefully a reporter for the New York Times someday. But for now, she has to write an article in each section of the newspaper. Her assignment for the Sports section is to track down some kid named Perseus Jackson (his parents really must've had it out for him) for a feature on the varsity boys swim team. PERSEUS JACKSON, contrary to popular belief, does not have a perfect life. First off, he hates his given name. You can call him Percy because he doesn't like reminders of how his dad's favorite song was probably A Boy Named Sue by Johnny Cash. The jerk decided to make Percy's life a living hell with such a weird name, and on Percy's twelfth birthday, he mysteriously disappeared. Joining the swim team made Percy feel like he could finally breathe again. But his safe haven is threatened by low grades-if he gets one more failing grade, he'll be put on academic probation and benched from the team. AN UNLIKELY BOND forms when Annabeth is enlisted as Percy's math tutor and an uneasy friendship forms. Annabeth learns to loosen the reins and live a little while Percy gains new ambition. Annabeth is hyper-focused, Percy is charming, and neither want to admit to undeniable chemistry. What could go wrong?
