Best friends and business partners Nymira Pryde and Ansley Fayne are Magicks, a race of beings that possess special abilities. Nymira can place herself into anyone's body by engulfing their soul. Ansley can implant fake memories into anyone's mind to make a lie believable. Together, they're the top Magicks for hire on the black market. They get the job done fast and precisely.

Every year, a couple dozen talented Magicks get summoned to the North Castle. For what, no one knows. In fact, nobody has realized that several Magicks disappear every year, as it is not uncommon for a Magick to pick up and wander away. When Nymira and Ansely are both summoned to the North Castle for a top-secret mission, neither are too shocked or too thrilled.

When they arrive at the castle, they find themselves surrounded by 22 of the top Magicks in the kingdom. The select few who make it to the end of the competition will be leading squadrons as generals in the upcoming war against the southern kingdom. They know that from that day on, they will be training and competing for the top positions. What they don't know is what the Royal Court is doing with the failures. Most expect they get sent home, but that is certainly not the case.

It's an accident that Nymira and Ansley stumble upon the truth of summoning Magicks to the castle, but what happens after they find out is full of purpose.
