This story is about the life of the Rich family, an African American family who move to the town of Heartsgrove, Pennsylvania in 1980. Alfred, who goes by Al, is an aspiring artist. His wife, Debra (who goes by Debbie) is an eccentric journalist. They have three children: Philip who likes to be called Bear, Joshua (Josh to you) and Penny. The story is split into parts, focusing on each child.

For five years, Bear enjoys the new and exciting things his new home has to offer. However, on the dawn of his eighth birthday, he realizes that he won't be able to enjoy the excitement of the town as an adult.
