The town of Willowden has built its identity around its successful eradication of witchcraft. Its brutal history of hunting down every last witch and burning them at the stake is memorialised every year in The Hunt. Every girl born in Willowden is forced into The Hunt in the year she turns 18. Let loose in the dense woods that surround the village, the girls are sent into the wild at night, and hunted by the Willowden menfolk until the early hours of the morning. They run, even though they know there is no fate except capture, and enduring the shaming ritual that follows.
Ellery is prepared to suffer The Hunt, but the day after her 18th birthday, she has an unexpected visitor. Soon, she discovers that her own fate may not be as clear - indeed, nestled inside her, for hundreds of years, has been an inheritance she didn't know of. And now the soul of the last witch burned in Willowden has come to use Ellery to fulfil the curse she lay on the village.
Will Ellery become the vessel for her revenge, or is there a way to end The Hunt and forge a new path for Willowden? And how will she decide the fate of her closest friend, Jack - the son of the Hunt Leader, destined to inherit his title, and the object of the witch's hatred?
