the soldiers mind ran , seemingly tripping over their own thoughts and worries in their subconscious mind , but despite that , there was a comfort that surpassed words . was it because their flame hadn 't been snuffed out ? because they had found companionship amongst it all ? or was it something different entirely ? either way there was a glint of gratitude hidden behind the worry , the fear of the uncertainty surrounding them . the fires embers lit up the place around them and they reached forward to grab a small pile of branches fallen from the trees and foliage around them , tossing one into the fanning fire as well . a small offering to the night and to whomever was keeping watch over them , a witness , a ritual of renewal .
the air carried the subtle scent of burning wood and pine , a comforting contrast to the lingering ache in their bone and marrow , something they prayed would settle down during the upcoming night , it couldn 't stop them from marching on . they couldn 't let the sacrifices , his help , be in vain . the firelight played upon their features , casting shadows around the soldier . their eyes closed for a moment , letting the events sink in and wash away as much as they could at that point in time . the night held its breath , honoring the silent pact of companionship forged in the crucible of conflict — then , their eyes opened once more , glancing towards him when they heard his words . the soldier softened in silence for a moment , as if one of consideration .
