Hi, I’m Isaac. You might know me from Support Group, and I might know you from Support Group. And before you ask, yes, I am blind. But my eyes were the cost of being officially NEC. I’m blind, but alive, so it’s okay.
My best friend, I am honoured to say, is Augustus Waters. Augustus Waters is a self-aggrandizing bastard. But we forgive him. We forgive him not because he has a heart as figuratively good as his literal one sucks, or because he knows more about how to hold a cigarette than any nonsmoker in history. But because he is my best friend.
And my other friend, I am also honoured to say, is Hazel Grace Lancaster. Or, as I sometimes patronizingly call her, Support Group Hazel. Hazel is wonderful. She’s funny without being mean. She always has something nice to say. And she knows the qualities of a good nurse. She is my very, very good friend.
Qualities of a Good Nurse:
1. Doesn’t pun on your disability. 'You'll see.' Really? I'm blind.
2. Gets blood on the first try. Seriously, this is huge. I mean is this my arm, or a freaking dartboard?
3. No condescending voice. ‘Is my little fuffywump sicky-wicky?’
That’s the list I made with Hazel.
A small piece of advice: When you fall in love, you make a promise. But sometimes when people make promises, they don’t fully understand it, Hazel’s right. But that is love. Love is keeping the promise. So I really do advise you, that when you fall in love, keep that promise. Always.
