When I open my eyes, the black void is what surrounds me. I rise from the ground, which is also pitch black, and observe my surroundings. As expected, I am in the middle of the hibiscus garden, all alone and dreaming. I hear the sloshing of water, calm and heavy behind me. It stops. I jump up straight. The floor I am standing on is wet, but not a single string of my dress is drenched. Preparing myself to see the same faceless figure again, I turn around slowly—body first, head last. Eyes that are cast down lift themselves with a wry smile dancing on my lips and a sarcastic remark on my tongue. But all thoughts and concerns die down at the sight before me.

His eyes are what draw me in—almond-shaped, contemplative, with a depth that shifts between soft detachment and sudden intensity, like light glancing off dark glass. His nose is slender with a smooth bridge, while his lips are drawn close in a manner that seems aloof or delicate, depending on the moment. There is harmony to his features—not cold, but like a marble sculpture lit up by a candle. His thoughts that he holds back at the moment make him seem almost inhuman. Something in my senses forbade me from getting close, but the human in me is curious. I take a step forward.

The closer I am, the brighter and more angelic his visage becomes. And it is only when we are close, inches apart, that I realise his eyes are not brown or blue or even green, but plum coloured. I gasp, and his lips part in surprise.

“Who are you?” I ask. “Why do you keep coming in my dreams?”

AT THE BEGINNING of the club days, when they were struggling to find ideas for a regular activity, they all had assumed Soumik's idea to be a hassle—most of them claimed that finding articles worth keeping would be a problem thanks to the literary and creative level of the student body and others claimed it was simply a waste of time and paper. Despite the claims and supposed worries of the members, time and papers weren't wasted, nor was the idea a flop. Every day, new and brighter ideas came flooding into the boxes, so they had the trouble of organising everything on the board because everything on the line was somehow better than the previous one in their grasp.

And now, on one of their last marked days in school, they were forced to pin them all one last time. After that day, their responsibilities would be taken down—they will no longer be able to have a moment of excitement or feel the track of mundanity in their high school life ever again, for final exams would be coming soon.

Hima rummaged through the old cartons, trying to find familiar art pieces or anything of that sort as a keepsake. No, she didn't have any sort of romantic or obsessive kind of feelings for the boy, but she had to admit, he made her feel something.

“Hima? Do you know anything about it?” Vismaya’s question startled her, awaking a thin frown between her brows. “How would I know?”

Ammu and Sethu blinked, Vismaya breathed softly while Vyshnavi, calm as ever, commented from behind. “Ah, yes, it's Soumik we’re talking about. The closer you are, the less likely he is to share his thoughts with you.”

The conversation was cut there as the trio strayed from the core to something else, the bond between Faizal and Soumik, their trust and all, but Hima could only pay attention to a certain part of Vyshnavi’s words. “The closer you are…”

          ‘But we are not close?’

Hima shook her head. Whatever she meant by that, she need not be concerned with it. What she needed to focus on was graduating from highschool without any issues. As on cue, her eyes met Faizal’s. He was sitting on the wooden bench in their classroom, silently weaving his fingers through Soumik’s dark locks, fingernails grazing the scalp while his eyes ran across the room, ears strained to hear every conversation that could be directed towards Soumik. Faizal’s stare made her squirm in her seat—she wanted to look away, she needed to look away, but she couldn’t, not when she was taught not to shy away from stares by her mother, even if she got angry when her gaze met hers in what she perceived as intense. His gaze demanded answers, explanations, anything to help him out of his misery. Hima yet again wanted to remind him, she was no foreseer. She had no clue what was going on with her. With them. If this was a fragmented reality or reality itself. If she’ll ever wake up from this ridiculously lengthy dream or die in it.

The weather mellowed for a moment: no harsh winds, no blasting thunders. And in the comfort it provided, she heard him speak, quiet but loud. A proclamation that went unnoticed by the boys.

“What am I even doing at this point?”

Hima turned around and there he was, in the same place as before, staring outside the windows. Hima shivered. Not from the freezing weather, not from the growing intensity of the rain outside the building. None of those could, at any point, mirror the tragedy befalling the boy’s face at that moment. Hima could not explain it. No, she never can. The face that he wore at that moment—that will haunt her for the entirety of her life if she had cared.

          She never did.

To her, she was just another boy in her class, a face to forget, a name to seal away in her mind. Nothing more, nothing less.
But then, he smiled. Vibrant like before, but god, had he shed his facade. His smile was a promise of a bitter future, and Hima chose to ignore the obvious sign of a disaster.

Maybe that was her sin. That was what made her a sinner. Cast away in this lonely land, all by herself, forced to fend for a moment of sanity, to ensure herself that she was still sane, she could only find a suitable answer. Why else would fate guide her back to the boy who was meant to die?

To teach her a lesson? To make her pay?

           Make her feel?
