I am from the Kumeyaay tribe of Southern California. I received a Bachelors and Masters in Architecture from University of California, Berkeley. I received a Ford Fellowship which allowed me to go to University. In 1978-80 I backpacked throughout SE Asia, Australia and New Zealand. I worked in the field of architecture for less than 5 years and decided it did not give me the creative opportunities I desired. I left architecture and co-founded a Native American art gallery/public education institution in San Francisco. I was executive director for 5 years and then decided to become a full time artist. I have worked as an artist for 28 years. My life took a radical shift on April 30, 2008 when I received a heart transplant after 2 years of deteriorating health. Since then my health has turned around so that I am now healthier than I was at age 35. I now work as an artist on my own schedule and enjoy everyday life.
