WHOLE THING IS DRIVING ME UP THE WALL, ILYA. NEED A CIGAR. […] WHERE ARE WE HEADIN’ NOW? I’VE HAD MY REST, BUT I’M BACK. ❜͟ ❜͟ it’s a public affair. the captain and lieutenant are tucked away in a secluded corner, one by one the task force realizes john’s sudden awakening. ilya’s words never fall deaf on john’s ears, perhaps he’s on auto—pilot. the mind of a captain settles in, the mission. being a dotting husband feels very (far, far, away.) mentally, he’s there. a bit clouded, but alert. physically? his body feels sluggish. delayed. hues remained slightly unfocused, hazy with the remnants of sleep and fatigue. his shoulders twitch and flinch at the feeling of ilya’s palms against his weighted gear. he wants to apologize for the scare, but john knows it wouldn’t be the last.

Calloused hands— worn down from years of work— rub gentle circles on his lovers leg. There’s an indescribable feeling lingering in his chest, a pot melting them all into a jumbled mess. He cannot deny the way his hand begins to shake, remembering how it felt having to watch his beloved run towards danger. The consequences of a giant heart and the call to action— always running towards danger to protect others. Others call it heroic, worthy of a medal but Ilya calls it (plain fucking stupidity).

Rather than start an argument, Ilya lets it simmer below his heated skin, instead; he bites his tongue and gives a soft smile to comfort John. “You were out for a bit— maybe a couple hours or so— we’re all glad you’re awake though.” With a sigh, shaky hands grab his husband, careful to not jostle him too much. “[You scared us— me. I am not ready to lose you as well so please, don’t do that ever again].”

The smell of the various potted flowers is overwhelming to his senses; it’s different from the gunpowder, burnt, and metallic smell he was so used to. It’s a welcome change, an idea for what could be a better life if he tried. Ilya’s eyes scan the rows of flowers, looking for peonies. “I haven’t bought flowers for anyone in so long. [I feel as if she would be disappointed, “not even for someone you love? That isn’t me?]”. It feels like a sin to make a joke about a deceased person, and as on cue, he makes the sign of a cross on his inner wrist. Forgive him, Lottie. He could not resist.

She’d like the peonies, I heard Macmillan talking about them one day.

“I suppose all that matters is the greater good for others— right?” A rhetorical question, not really meant to invoke a conversation regarding it. More so a jab at Graves, and his unusual methods for protect and serve. (God he really did not like this guy). “Of course, we all have a job to do, [some people just do it better than you]. Good to have you here.”

“[Can’t say I’m impressed or that I like you, at all].” As he talks in Russian, he grins, barely tolerating the other’s presence. “I’ve heard things. Both good, and bad. Like others.”
