Long book rant because I can.
I recently read Fourth Wing, and the writing feels like a copy of every other book being popped out each month. Yeah, it was an easy read, and I flew through it quite fast, but that doesn’t mean it was intriguing. The moment the fmc, and the mmc decided romance was the way to go it was all you heard about. The majority of the second half felt like smut with light drama. Even major character death like Liam’s just felt rushed, and bland. Authors’ goals these days are either write the horniest, and basic plot in hopes of hitting it with their main audience, those who reside on booktok, or trying to pump out book after book. Yes, there are actual good books coming out like The Shepherd King duology, but books just aren’t unique anymore though you can also argue that it’s all been done before. Everything is a copy of another thing, and that’s just how it’ll be. I am thankful that there are plenty of books becoming popular from booktok that have always been good, and just needed a bigger push. Yet you also have dark romance becoming a normal thing, and while anyone can argue that they don’t actually support that media, and it’s just fun to read you’re still romanticizing abusive relationships, stalkers, and just toxic relationships in general. You cannot argue that because it’s fictional it is okay. I do not want to hear Haunting Adeline being defended by a 40 year old woman. These sort of books, and just books with smut, are also find their way into the hands of kids(13-16). Anyone can argue all day that “hey, you were reading that stuff too,” and yeah we probably were, but that doesn’t make it okay. I feel like requiring an ID when buying books should become a requirement because I shouldn’t be at Books A Million watching a 14 year old walk out with Icebreaker, horrible book btw, or even the twisted series. I’m ending my rant here because I’ve almost hit the word limit + it’s just a mix of different rants.
