I have just read the most insultingly condescending post on here that I've read for a good long while. @Ambassadors have recently posted on their Conversation about the Bechdel Test, and I am frankly shocked. Genuinely.

Surely no-one writes stories any more where women aren't named, say fewer than six words to each other or share less than a chapter ("one minute of screen time," in the original test jargon; it's for films).

I am very pleased to say that all the women in my stories have minds, names and cognitive ability, can form meaningful sentences in actual languages sufficient to communicate with both each other and any men they might encounter, and take up every single one of my chapters.

They even manage to get themselves up in the mornings, hold down jobs, and remember to feed and hydrate themselves, between making the effort to name each other and say all of five words in conversation.

Are we really still fighting this battle in 2026? I'd have thought we'd be at least halfway up the hill by now. No?

@NicoletteSalle You're welcome. I look forward to reading it. (Do like a retelling of an ancient myth.) Abi x

Have you discovered @The_Weekend_Write-In?

The idea is that a one-word prompt is given every Friday, and any stories that result are shared in the comments.

If you read, it is collection of short stories (100 or 500 words) which builds up over time and can be dipped into as you wish. The whole is a wonderfully varied mix - by turns, fun, touching, thought-provoking and unashamedly entertaining.

If you write, it's a fun little challenge with no pressure and very manageable criteria.

Best of all, the community that the Weekend Write-In project has built is very valuable. It is welcoming, friendly and relaxed; there are no preconceptions, no pressure; every story, and every reader, is welcome. Everyone has their own take on the prompt, and on the resulting stories, and that is what makes it so much fun.

I can honestly say that discovering this little safe corner of Wattpad has been invaluable for me, both creatively and emotionally, since I did so back in 2024. Do yourself the same favour, and swing by.

          Take care

Hi all
          Hope everyone is well.

@BooksbyLwordpress has untiringly been promoting overlooked writing for years on here, and does a great job. (She's also lovely.) One thing she does is a seasonal prompt contest - the nice thing is the prompts are just a situation, and you are left free to build around it. Currently Fall 2025 is open: https://www.wattpad.com/story/330455266-prompt-contest-hall-of-fame

Check it out. (Deadline for writers is 9th Dec.)

The miserable autumnal weather we've had in the UK over the last week or two 'inspired' me to pick up one of the prompts for the Fall/Autumn 2025 round: https://www.wattpad.com/1592659338-short-stories-2025-a-new-girl

          Take care,

@BlueBirdAwards Yes, I saw that. I don't think I can offer what you're looking for.

Anyone out there who is a reader, have you considered the role of a critical friend?
These people @BlueBirdAwards are looking for a bank of readers to help them run their awards series. Having done this in a modest way before, I know it will involve giving positive criticism on stories you wouldn't otherwise encounter, and in the process discovering some great writing. I can recommend it as a two-way valuable way of volunteering the time you would be spending on here anyway.
