I have read a billion and one books over the years and what always fascinated me was the fact that writers could transport you to other worlds without you leaving your own. 

They can describe emotions and make them so real that you feel them as If they were your own. Books are a way of breaking away from normal life and living in someone else's shoes for a moment.
