Today is one of the most important days to some and I would just like to share why. International Scoliosis Awareness Day is observed on this day every year. This morning I saw someone posted online that scoliosis isn't such a "big deal," like what people make it seem and I was a bit upset.
Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine. Yup, not a "big deal" but it is scary for some patients. It is painful for some, it lowers one's self esteem and yeah, I guess not a "big deal" at all. One of the biggest challenges with patients with the illness can be the public and the way scoliosis is portrayed in the media, such as a curved spine being the blunt end of a joke. Having to look physically different and receive comments and looks from others on a daily basis, is definitely a "big deal." I just came on this platform, which I use the most to promote awareness of scoliosis and reduce the stigma and discrimination of the condition.
Instead of comparing traumas, think of trying to uplift each other. To support people with scoliosis and also people in the LGBTQ+ community, since it is Pride Month, please remember to be mindful of your words, be supporting, encouraging, respectful, honest and especially, aware. If you have scoliosis or don't, or you are a part of the LGBTQ+ community please remember, don’t give in. People will talk, the pain may pound, the embarrassment may overtake your thoughts, but don’t give in!
I want people to be proud and empowered by their scars (physical or emotional) and realize that your flaws are a normal part of your life and that having them does not stop you from being who you are and doing what you want to do! Be you, be proud, flaunt your quirks, scars and imperfect perfections. Be driven, embrace your curve, embrace any and every illness you have, embrace the issues you might have going on in your life. Be proud and please remember to smile!
