I never really write anything on the board, but this time it’s much needed. My mind is so disturbed, and tears keep coming back. Whenever I close my eyes, I see her smiling face. Justice seems too far away for our sister, Dr. Moumita Debnath. I ask all of you to keep praying that her culprit receives the punishment they deserve and that she, as well as our whole nation, gets the justice they deserve.
It's early in the morning, and I couldn't sleep the whole night. My mind kept going back and forth between thoughts of her. She was a stranger, but now she feels more like one of us girls who are staying away from home, chasing our dreams. Even though we never met, we were still connected as women. Minute after minute, I found myself crying, thinking about her family, the people who must have known her closely, and the moment when she couldn’t even protect herself from what was about to happen to her.
This fear of slowly walking through life, struggling so much, and then suddenly having everything crumble at the hands of men who have become inhuman fills me with disappointment in our country’s men and justice system.
To think that what happened to her could happen to anyone around you, to you, or to someone you know. To think that it could happen to any woman out there. How easily and brutally she was strangled to death by monsters lurking everywhere around us. Our system is failing us again and again. It started with one woman, but now we’ve lost count. It wasn’t just Nirbhaya; it was, and always is, women.
