I’ve been on Wattpad for more than 10 years now, and I’ve read countless books. Some I liked, and a few I’d probably never hope to see again. But even when those books weren’t perfect, even when the grammar wasn’t right or the language wasn’t fancy, there was still some story that touched my heart. And that has always been the beauty of WordPad.
That’s why, even now when I’m an adult, doing adult stuff and adulting, I still find solace here on Wattpad. But recently, I’ve been noticing something. Writers are using so much GPT and AI that even reading a book feels robotic. The storyline feels robotic. Even the feelings don’t feel the way they used to.
At first, I noticed it in one book and thought, okay, maybe the writer is just taking some help, which is fine. We’re in the time of AI, everything is connected to it in some way. But when I felt like the whole book was written by AI… no. It wasn’t about big hyphens or anything obvious. It was the way the sentences felt, the way the structure looked. It felt like a box. And writing is not supposed to feel like a box. It’s supposed to flow, it’s supposed to feel real.
So I stopped reading that book. I thought maybe it just wasn’t for me, and of course there are people who enjoy it. But then I opened another book, same feeling. Different author, but the same style. Then a third book, where the description pulled me in, it looked so promising. But once I started reading, again the same thing. Same boxed writing, same flat flow. How can three different writers have the exact same style? Because they weren’t really writing it themselves. It was AI.
And look, I’m not here to name anyone or throw shade. Using AI is fine. We all want to write better, to write in the “right” way. But let’s not forget what writing really is, it’s emotion.
And if the whole thing is written by ChatGPT, that emotion won’t be there.
I just had to say this because I was frustrated. But yeah.
That’s it
Peace out
