@Amaliasilk yeah, that’s probably great, but have you thought of a concept of dissociative Identity disorder-suffering Hermaphroditus? Where Salmacis is like an alter while Hermaphroditus being the ego state? Because I DID (no pun  intended).
            Otherwise, her wish to be with him/them forever was not granted and she just died leaving her female genitalia to him/them.

I was planning for Artemis to use hermaphroditus until he finds out and goes crying to his mother in revenge Aphrodite curses Artemis to be wanted by any men who meet her. In turn Aphrodite makes him an erot

@Amaliasilk about Hermaphroditus, within a continuity that Salmacis is a rapist, slap a disclaimer saying you’d misgender a rapist to respect the victim’s gender Identity any day and if the readers wouldn’t, they are rooting for the rapist and are to be frowned upon… if you want to use the male pronoun.
            But, in a continuity where Salmacis ISN’T a rapist, or if you don’t want to use the male pronoun in the rapist Salmacis continuity for whatever reason,I suggest you adress Hermaphroditus with Turkish loanpronouns. Turkish pronouns are gender neutral, and a bonus fact, Fountain of Salmacis is located in Bodrum, TURKEY now. 
            I’d wager, even the ones who puke out of disgust when people supports neopronouns will kinda accept Turkish loanpronouns.
