I have lived in California my entire life. I can't imagine living anywhere else. I have an affinity for the desert. I'm awestruck by our mountains. I spend as much time outdoors as I can because that's where I feel most at home. Connecting with nature has transformed my life and profoundly affected the way I view the world and my place in it. It gives me solace when I feel overwhelmed by how much our world and culture and future have changed.
Through my journaling and nonfiction, I share what I am learning as I attempt to synthesize my life experience, to find a narrative that makes sense. Where can I be a catalyst for positive change or a barrier to injustice? Where should I stand firm and where should I yield? Which of my beliefs have stood the test of time and which ones need to be discarded? I want to figure out what is true - about the world, this life, and me, dig below the surface and background noise in my head to find the real stream of consciousness. This is the journey I'm on.
Through my fiction, I explore the ways people adapt to change, how they struggle to hold on to their identity when everything has gone sideways, and how even in chaos there are opportunities for transformation. I am fascinated by the inflection point between the past and the unexpected present and unknown or unwanted future. Why does misfortune and upheaval bring out the best in some and the worst in others?
Some of my favorite quotes:
Don't believe everything you think.
When people show you who they are, believe them the first time.
Forgiveness means giving up any hope of changing the past.
I too shall pass.
