Y'all, this is just kinda a rant post cuz I didn't have anyone to talk to about this irl.

I just finished a class where they were talking about fanfiction writers and it kinda just made me upset and uncomfortable. Basically, everyone was talking about how all, and I'm quoting this, "all fanfictions are terrible". Obviously, it didn't stop there and they continued talking about how unoriginal and childish fanfictions are. Now, I know there are books out there that don't always catch your eye or you just don't like but the way they just generalized all writers just made me feel like fanfiction writers don't get enough credit, especially if it's extremely well-written.

Sure, our base work might not be that original because we are writing off of something that already exists but even putting our own twist to it takes talent and creativity that usually goes unnoticed. I feel bad I didn't defend this claim in the class because I'm too scared to speak up. But degrading someone's effort and time like this, just because "it's a fanfiction" doesn't make your slander okay. As a writer, this really hurt me and I'm sure it would hurt a lot of other people. If people are putting genuine effort into something, let them be. If you don't like it, don't say it's terrible, instead, give some constructive criticism so they can get better- especially if they are looking for feedback!

For those who might wanna argue that it's unoriginal, read some very successful fanfictions. It doesn't matter whether it's on Wattpad, Tumblr, AO3, DevianArt, anywhere. So many writers add their own storyline and make it into an entirely different book with just the same characters. Sometimes is an alternate universe, sometimes it's different series of scenarios, sometimes it's the addition of new characters. If that is still unoriginal to you, I don't know what I can do to change your mind.

Fanfiction authors are writers too. Writing about already existing storylines doesn't make you inferior.

@Ryugan I completely agree! There are so many writers out there with so much potential and some of them even publish original works that you can easily find in libraries and whatnot. It's just a shame that fanfiction writing is looked down upon the way it is, even though these famous writers once wrote this exact genre.

Also the fact that many published authors started writing fanfiction before they wrote completely original work because it gave them the opportunity to play around with characters they were already familiar with thus allowing them to improve their overall writing skills. There are also many published works that started out as fanfiction, but were so different from the original source material a reader wouldn’t even be able to tell where the authors inspiration came from.

And I don’t know about you, but I’ve also read many fanfictions that were more engaging, interesting, and better written than some published original works I’ve come across.
