I should add that the time of his curse by the king of Faery was 1185.

Surely anyone interested in Fantasy and Historical fiction could really go to town in any historical period between 1185 up to the present with Willam Palmer as the melancholy, compassionate, seriously handsome, hero trying to save the world.

I am totally blown away by the bbc radio drama Pilgrim series by Sebastian Baczkiewicz. It features a fascinating protagonist William Palmer. The premise is that he was cursed on the way on the way to Cantebury when he encountered the King of the Grayfolk, Faery. He denied the existence of Faery, being a truly pious pilgrim. The king then cursed Palmer to immortality, denying him a normal death. From that time to this William Palmer has walked the world trying to protect humans ("hotbloods") from the wicked caprices of the grayfolk and other supernaturals he encounters between the everyday world and the Otherworld. A fabulous basis for chilling dramas.
